American Academy of Pediatrics California Chapter 2
2023 - January Edition
|

Grant Christman, MD, MACM, FAAP
|
|
Happy New Year! As we enter 2023, my resolution as your chapter president is to find new ways to reach out to you, the members of this chapter. I want to hear feedback on how we can best support your practice and where we should direct our advocacy efforts.
In this issue, Dr. Kamaal Jones, Chapter 2 legislative and policy analyst, reports on one of these member outreach efforts: the chapter’s 2023 Advocacy Survey.
|
|
As expected, child behavioral and mental health was the top issue of concern among survey respondents, followed by child poverty and childcare / early childhood education. We plan to continue to send out this survey annually, and hope that each of you will contribute your opinions and ideas.
After years of surplus, the State of California faces a projected $22.5 billion budget deficit which makes it more difficult to fund new programs for children. The Sacramento Bee reports that Gov. Newsom’s proposed spending plan will preserve the implementation of universal transitional kindergarten, but defers spending on a planned childcare expansion. We plan to work within our own advocacy committee and together with the other three California chapters to advocate for continued child health funding in the face of these challenges.
The next AAP-CA2 social will be held on February 11 in Ventura County; you can RSVP in the upcoming events section below. An event in Kern County will follow, tentatively scheduled for late March. Please email Tomas at ttorices@aapca2.org if you have any ideas for an event or would like to host with the chapter’s support!
The Member Spotlight features Dr. Melissa Bent, a non-operative pediatric orthopedist at CHLA.
The Resident Corner features the Call for Abstracts for the Advances in Pediatrics Symposium.
I would like to welcome our new chapter members and encourage them to get involved by joining a chapter committee. Information about our committees and other resources are available on our website, aapca2.org. Your support makes the work of this chapter possible!
Some other highlights and upcoming events in this month’s newsletter include:
- AAP is accepting nominations for AMA delegates, as well as for various committees.
- Deadline for CATCH grants is January 23rd.
- CDPH released new CAIR documentation requirements
- February 11 | AAP-CA2 Social in Ventura County
- March 21 | First 5 San Luis Obispo Town Hall
-
March 26-28 | AAP Advocacy Conference in Washington DC

Grant Christman, MD, MACM, FAAP
