Hello
Please join us in welcoming the following people to Sherrod Library!
|
We anticipate welcoming several new librarians this Fall; they'll appear in the Fall newsletter. See our vacancies for an Associate Dean and two research and instruction librarians.

Goodbye
We would also like to say farewell and best wishes to those who left to pursue other opportunities or retired in 2020!

Sherrod Library continually purchases electronic and print books on a variety of topics. In addition to supporting every academic program, we offer books on a wide range of topics, from differing viewpoints on current issues, to how-to books, to career planning to fiction, as well as faculty and alumni authors. The Sherrod Library is creating a new forum for faculty to help inform and shape our library. In Fall ‘22, the Sherrod Library will launch a new Faculty Advisory Council. Comprised of faculty members from academic departments and Sherrod librarians and administration, this council will provide two-way communications between the library and the campus we serve.
If you want to know more about this initiative or volunteer for our inaugural council, please visit our website and reach out with any questions or comments.

Our highlighted resource for Spring 2022 is a mapping and data visualization tool called Social Explorer.
Social Explorer contains hundreds of thousands of data indicators across demography, economy, health, education, religion, crime and more. You can view this information at many geographic levels: national, state, county, ZIP, neighborhood and more.
Social Explorer has over 220 years of U.S. Census data (including the most recent 2020 Census), U.S. elections, crime, business, environmental, health, and religion data, even statistics for Europe and World Development Indicators.
For course instructors, Social Explorer is a great resource that can help your students develop critical-thinking skills, data literacy and reasoning.
There are many possibilities where Social Explorer can be used in areas such as Sociology, Education, Criminal Justice, Business, Public Health, History, and Political Science.
Furthermore, Social Explorer offers over 200 “Teach and Learn” modules across these subject areas that are ready for use in the classroom.
If you have any questions or need any assistance in integrating this content into your courses, Sherrod Library is available to help. Feel free to reach out via libsupport@etsu.edu, and a Sherrod Librarian will reach out to assist.

Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students
Regional conference hosted at ETSU, Sherrod Library
|
In March 2022, Sherrod Library hosted the 4th biennial conference Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students (TLGS). Created by academic librarians for academic librarians as a regional conference in 2016, TLGS has continued to evolve and expand into what is now an international conference and gathering point for practitioners in academic libraries to share their knowledge and experience supporting graduate students; graduate faculty; graduate programs; and their development as graduate librarians. In addition to the official repository, the TLGS umbrella includes a listserv; an ACRL book of the same title (Transforming libraries to serve graduate students); and a web series on YouTube.

Stand up to censorship
Panel hosted at ETSU, Sherrod Library
|
On April 13, 2022, the library hosted a diverse discussion on how the impact of censorship and book banning in libraries affects the whole community. Facilitated by Tiffany Watson, ETSU faculty shared their expertise and opinions about the growing rise of censorship locally and nationally. Deep thanks to Ms. Watson for organizing and facilitating the panel, as well as our esteemed colleagues, Dr. Daryl Carter, Dr. Scott Honeycutt, Assistant Professor Renee Lyons, and Dr. Stacey Williams.
