May 2022
April was kind of a bummer
· We saw the cancellation of two events ----the Caffeine and Porsches gathering that was planned for Saturday, April 16th, was cancelled due to forecast of heavy rain. Well it did not rain in the downtown Sacramento area but there were reports of much rain outside of the downtown area so we made the right decision. Nevertheless we had about 20 cars show up and just shoot the breeze. A brand new Taycan GTS (black in color) showed up and gathered a lot of attention. Many of us went inside the museum to check out the Lowriders exhibit. And I was able to distribute more of the SVR 60th Anniversary decals.
The other event that was cancelled (actually moved and combined with the 60th Anniversary event on September 10th) was the Charity Auction. The signups were a little lite so the decision was made to conduct the event later in the year.
· And of course John Leet and the AX Crew conducted the 2nd AX of the 2022 SVR series at Thunderhill.
· There will be another Caffeine and Porsches at CAM in October.
May looks promising
· The tour to Murphys on Saturday, May 21st, came out of the blue and was organized and finalized by Eduardo Ortega, Jr. in a matter of less than 10 days. This included getting volunteers to help lead two tour groups, submit a budget, do a flyer, and get the MSR established. Thanks to everyone who responded so quickly. All we need now is for folks to sign up. It will be limited to 30 cars. The tour is FREE.
· The Pacific Grove Tour continues to add more cars. Looks like Jim and Linda McMahen have put together another great event (they do this tour every two years).
· And John Leet and crew have their hands full with the AX at Thunderhill on Saturday, May 14th. And then they stay for the next day when Redwood Region hosts another AX as part of the 2022 Zone 7 AX series.
Decals for SVR 60th Anniversary
· We continue to pass out decals at SVR events.
· Our concours chair, Al Price III, suggests that the best way to apply them (they do not have the sticky adhesive --- which makes for easy removal as well) is to be sure and clean the surface completely, let it dry, then apply. The decal itself has no instructions on it. They are made for placement on the inside of a window surface.
Update from Zone 7 and PCA National
· The PCA Spring raffle is under way. Winner gets a 2022 Cayman GT4 RS. All it takes is a $50 ticket. Last day to purchase tickets is June 1, 2022.
· Our concours on Sunday, June 5th at Porsche Rocklin, is the first in the 2022 Zone 7 Series.
Upcoming PCA National Events
· Registration for the 66th Porsche Parade is open. This year it is being held in the Poconos, Pennsylvania. Check out porscheparade.org
· More than 1100 cars have signed up already
· Phase II opened on April 6th for the banquets, events, etc. Registration closes on May 14th.
2022 Formula E Season (all electric)
· The TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E team was doing very well after 5 races. They are currently in second place in the team standings (out of 11 teams).
· The TAG Heuer Porsche team consists of Porsche 99X Electric vehicles with #36 driven by Andre Lotterer and #94 driven by Pascal Wehrlein.
· There were two races at Rome on April 9th and 10th. Porsche took 8th and 10th on the Saturday race and 4th and 6th at the Sunday race.
· Lotterer is currently in 6th place in the driver standings. And Wehrlein is just one point behind him in 7th place.
· And then the 6th race was held on Saturday, April 30th in Monaco. The two Porsches started 2nd and 6th on the grid. But they did not finish the race. So no points for the TAG Heuer Porsche Team.
· The next two races are on May 14th and 15th in Berlin. They are carried live on the CBS Sports Network.

Happy May!
We start off the month early, with two activities in the first weekend.
Friday, May 6, is the Pacific Grove Tour. The tour is chaired by Jim McMahen with lots of help from his charming wife, Linda. Friday, everyone will take a scenic tour down to Pacific Grove. Saturday, people are on their own to sight see, go to the street fair in Pacific Grove, shop and/or eat their hearts out. Sunday, everyone will return home, picking their own route.
Saturday, May 7, is the Saturday Breakfast. Jerry Alter welcomes any and all who can make it. This event is casual and allows for a lot of socializing, getting to know new members and reconnecting with ones you already know.
Saturday, May 14, is our third autocross of the season. Don’t forget to thank John Leet and his crew for continuing to work so hard on our autocross series.
Saturday, May 21, is the Spring Tour to Murphys. Eduardo Ortega, Jr., will lead the tour from the starting point in El Dorado Hills south through the foothills to Murphys for lunch, where Raleigh Morrow will welcome everyone at the Murphys Highway 4 Diner. After lunch, there will be optional wine tasting at Ironstone Winery, or at any other of many wineries in the area, or an enjoyable stroll and window shopping in historic downtown Murphys.
Sunday, May 22, is the Concours Judging School at Nelson’s Garage in Shingle Springs. If you are interested in being a concours judge, here’s your chance to learn the ropes.
Looking toward June, we again have a Saturday Breakfast on the 4th, the SVR Concours on the 5th, a dinner at Red Bus Brewery on the 9th, and the fourth SVR autocross on the 11th. And for those of you who are already registered, the 66th Porsche Parade June 12 - 18 in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania.

Redwood Rally
By Jim Robison
Does broccoli pairs well with Furthermore Wines? Does Hawkes Cabernet Sauvignon pair with kumquats? How about Two Black Widow Vineyard paired with salsa? And, of course, frog legs should pair well with Toad Hollow Vineyard, right? Well, according to the Redwood Region “Wine Pairing Rally,” they do.
Saturday April 23rd was a beautiful day for a drive through the Sonoma County wine country. The route took us from the Graton Fire Department north, roughly along the Russian River, to the Alexander Valley, then south to our finish in Windsor.
Forty-five wineries were identified, in alphabetical order, along with foods they supposedly paired well with. The objective was to list the foods in the correct order on the scorecard as the wineries appeared along the route. It’s as simple as Passalacqua and fruit cake!
Keeping with the wine and food pairing theme, “trophies” consisted of bottles of wine and their corresponding foods, along with a place ribbon. First place was a bottle of La Crema Pinot Noir with a Snickers bar and a bottle of MacRostie Chardonnay with a bag of potato chips. Second place was a bottle of Sonoma – Cutrer Pinot Noir with a bag of Cheetos and a bottle of Dry Creek Vineyard Chenin Blanc with an Almond Joy candy bar. Third place was a bottle of J. Pedroncelli Cabernet Sauvignon with a bag of M & M's.
Our next rally is “Devil’s Gulch 2022” on Saturday May 21st. This time-speed-distance (TSD) rally starts in San Rafael and finishes in Windsor. With multiple speed changes and 16 checkpoints along the 105-mile paved route, Devil’s Gulch will challenge even the most experienced teams. Registration is open to PCA members from all regions at MSReg.com/Devil’sGulch.
Jim Robison (Redwood) and Darrel Huckabay (Sacramento Valley) are working on an interesting TSD scheduled for June 18th. The “Alternate Route Rally,” starting and finishing in Dixon, will give contestants their choice of paved or gravel routes.
“There and Back Again,” on July 16 & 17, will consist of two TSD rallies with an overnight stay at the Twin Pines Resort & Casino in Middletown. All roads are paved with a start in Napa and a finish in Sonoma. Tours, following the rally routes, will be offered both days for folks who like to drive (and party) but don’t want to be concerned with arriving at checkpoints on time.
The “Mt. Tam Trek,” Saturday August 13th will start at Marin Porsche and finish at Mary’s Pizza in Novato. The all-paved, 85-mile TSD will include two breaks at scenic rest areas. A tour is also planned to follow the rally route through some of the most scenic country in America
.
On September 10th the Redwood region will host the “Harvest Moon Rally,” an 80-mile paved road night TSD starting in Santa Rosa about 7 PM and finishing in Rohnert Park about 10:00 PM. It’s amazing how the entire environment changes when the sun sets. Roads you have driven a dozen times in the daylight become new, different, more interesting, perhaps more exotic.
For more information on any of the above events, please contact Jim Robison, Rally Director, Redwood Region PCA at jim_robison@comcast.net.

SVR Autocross School Graduates 8th Class of Drivers
By Collin Fat
Photos by Collin Fat
It is amazing the recent class of 2022 celebrates the 8th consecutive year that the club has hosted an autocross school. Even more amazing is that each year, the school has sold out! When the school was conceived back in 2014, autocross participation in the club’s series barely averaged around 25 drivers per event and the program was lucky to breakeven.
The team decided that one way in which to increase participation was to organize an autocross school to teach interested members about the sport and to include some hands-on training. Normally at an event, beginners can always seek instruction from one of the autocross teams talented instructors, but that experience is fairly limited to the driving without an opportunity to teach all of the physics involved in car dynamics nor to convey all of the information passed on to students attending the school.
The school’s 2 day format features a 6 hour class room session where the concepts of apex, exit speeds, understeer, oversteer, and car control dynamics are thoroughly discussed followed by another session at the track where the students learn threshold braking, practice leaning how to navigate a skid pad, learning slalom technique and combing all of the skills on a very technical figure 8 drill.
The school has graduated well over 240 students over the years and many of the students are still very much involved in the program. In addition, the impact that these students have had on our autocross attendance numbers has been amazing with over 200% growth over the past 8 years. In 2014, average attendance was about 25 drivers per event. For 2021, our average attendance was an astounding 55 drivers per event and continuing to grow.
I would like to acknowledge the efforts put on to produce the annual school by some of the following autocross team members over the last 8 years: Bob Peake, Matt Deter, Steve Nieslony, Joy Nieslony, Collin Fat, Ed Busuttil, Tim Howard, Weyland Fat, John Leet, Greg Zajic, Melinda Lincoln, David Schnitzer, Carl Winkler, Allan Booth, Martin Messersmith, Hector Chavez, and the dozen of volunteer instructors who have helped out over the years. A huge thank you!
This year’s graduating class had 34 drives in attendance with several women in attendance that included Karen Messersmith and Patti Osterholm. The weather at Thunderhill Raceway was cold and a little windy but the rain was kept at bay until after the school and cleared for the club’s first autocross of the season on Sunday.

Sacramento Valley Region Autocross #1
By Collin Fat
Event Chair,
Photos by Collin Fat
The first autocross of the 10-event season was held on March 20th at Thunderhill Raceway Park in Willows, California. 52 drivers competed in wonderful spring like weather with temperatures in the upper 60’s and sunny skies. The event followed the AX school held the day before on March 19th that concluded the two-day autocross program for nearly 30 students.
Course designer, Martin Messersmith, did a great job designing a very fast 40 second course that had room for full throttle acceleration followed by hard braking technical sweepers.
Lots of fun and challenging for even the experienced drivers participating. There were 6 students who participated that had just graduated from the autocross school. They were looking to fine tune their newly acquired skills. With Covid restrictions for in car instruction having been lifted, the SVR team provided in car instruction to all drivers who requested instruction is provided free of charge to all drivers whether they have had a few years of prior autocross experience or are brand new to the sport.
SVR autocross is the only high-performance driving event for members seeking to test their driving skills and the performance of their Porsche car.

Results:
Top time of day honors went to Drew Powers of Redwood Region with a blistering time of 41.774 seconds followed by RJ Harrison, Golden Gate Region with a time of 42.705 and SVR’s David Borden driving his 2019 Porsche GT3 with a time of 42.932. Sacramento Valley autocrossers Alan Booth, John Leet, Carl Winkler, Collin Fat and Greg Zajic rounded out the top ten. The top ten finishers time and place are below.

Your Tires at High Speed.
by Pedro P. Bonilla (GCR PCA)
Tire inflation specs are based on what the manufacturer considers “normal” driving conditions.
But, because of the cars we drive and the Club we belong to, many of us have the opportunity to go beyond “normal” driving conditions at the track during the Driver Education events organized by our PCA and other auto clubs in the area.
Let’s try to put it in perspective.
Even though we tend to think that properly inflated tires are perfectly round, they truly aren’t.
Because of the weight they carry (vehicle, fluids and passenger(s)) , the bottom half of the tire’s sidewalls bulge and the tread flattens where it contacts the road.
But on the top half of the tire, the sidewalls straighten out and the tread curves back into its molded round shape. This difference in shape between the top and bottom halves of a tire is known as “deflection”.
This deflection will occur with every revolution of the tire, so picture this:
A 225/45/ZR17 tire could be considered a standard front tire in a Boxster, Cayman or Carrera. This particular tire has a 25 inch overall diameter and after doing the math we know that this tire will turn approximately 807 times every mile. At 25 miles per hour this tire will roll 5.6 times per second, at 70 mph (speed limit on the Interstate) it will roll15.7 times per second and at 140 mph (speed right before braking for turn 17 at Sebring) the tire will roll a daunting 31.4 times every second. This means that the tire is changing its shape from its unloaded to its loaded state and back every 3/100th of a second.
|
|
|
|
This constant tire deflection plus the friction of the tire against the road (track) generates tremendous heat build-up in the tires. Since the tires are filled with air (or nitrogen) which is a gas, Boyles Law demonstrates that if the volume of gas is maintained constant, its pressure is directly proportional to its temperature, therefore your tire pressure will go up as the tire gets used, and the faster the tires spin, the faster the temperature and therefore the pressure will build up.
The rule of thumb is that the tire’s pressure will increase by 1 psi for every 10° Fahrenheit increase in temperature, or 1 psi for every 4 minutes of use during the first 20 minutes of operation.
All of the above to basically say that the faster you go, the higher your tire pressure will be.
So, when we’re at the track or Auto Cross we must keep in mind that we will have a tire pressure increase as soon as the tires start to heat up. This will alter our car’s handling, so we need to carefully monitor the pressure throughout the different sessions during the day.
But how do we know what the ideal pressure is?
We should generally start with the recommended pressures from the car’s manufacturer. Then, the tires will tell us if they need more or less pressure.
Most modern high-speed rated tires have special markers to show us the optimal tire patch.
|
|
|
|
This triangle tells us where the edge of the optimal tread wear should be.
As you can see above, the wear is a little short of the marker, meaning that we have too much pressure.
Dropping a couple of pounds of pressure and then hitting the track again gives us the optimal patch, as seen below where the edge of the wear is right to the tip of the marker.
|
|
|
|
Also, always keep in mind that you should never inflate beyond the tire’s maximum pressure, stamped on its sidewall.
|
|
|
|

Keep an eye on your tire’s pressures and ...
Happy Porsche’ing,
Pedro
