Barton Academy Students Visit the McCall Library
On April 11, the McCall Library welcomed a group of German language students from Barton Academy for Advanced World Studies who were conducting research on German immigrants to Mobile. The group first viewed the Joseph Bloch traveling exhibit and then settled into the archives for their individual research projects on such topics as Dave Levi and the Comic Cowboys, architect Rudolph Benz, and the German Relief Association papers. We're grateful for the collaboration of Dr. Christine Rinne for arranging the visit and glad to have young community members making use of our resources.

Biomedical Library Celebrates COM Students
Jag Proud! Here are some of our future doctors - halfway to their 3rd year and closer to their MD goal. Recently the Biomedical Library gave some of our deserving COM students a treat after they had finished testing. The library shared some goodie bags with them to let the students know that we are very proud of all their hard work. - Karena Harrell

Welcome Gail Kouame, Director, Baugh Biomedical Library
Gail Kouame has joined the USA Libraries as the Director of the Biomedical Library. Gail came to USA from Augusta University where she was the Assistant Director for Research & Education Services at the Robert B. Greenblatt, MD Library for over 5 years.
She also worked at the University of Washington Health Sciences Library, first as the Consumer Health Outreach Coordinator for the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, and later as the Assistant Director for HEAL-WA, the On-Call Library for Washington State Practitioners.
Prior to becoming a librarian, Gail was a social worker in long-term care, assisting elderly clients and their families. Gail grew up in the Bay Area in California and later moved to Washington State where she lived for 30 years, prior to her move to Augusta, GA. Gail raised her two daughters in Washington and now has seven grandchildren. In her free time, Gail enjoys walking and hiking, traveling, live music, and enjoying a nice glass of wine and conversation with friends and family.

Welcome Kaitlyn Moody, Government Documents/Serials LTA II for the Marx Library
The Government Documents department welcomes a new staff member, Ms. Kaitlyn Moody. She graduated from the University of South Alabama in 2020 with a degree in Secondary Education/English and will graduate with a Master's in Library & Information Science from the University of Southern Mississippi this coming Fall. Kaitlyn is not completely new to the Gov Docs department, however, as she completed a practicum this past year under the guidance of Ms. Vicki Tate. She has a genuine interest in bringing awareness to government materials as a way to enhance information literacy skills and is excited to continue growing as a library professional at USA.

Sandy House, Secretary at Baugh Biomedical Library, Retires
After working at the University of South Alabama for more than 33 years, Sandra Vrachalus House will retire on May 1, 2022. Currently serving as the Secretary for the Biomedical Library, she is also an adjunct instructor for the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work. Previously, she worked with Dr. Woody Hannum in the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies, Dr. Madhuri Mulekar in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and April Hill in the Office of Contact Tracing as a Contact Tracer.
Describing her commitment to the University of South Alabama, Sandy commented: “I have had the pleasure of working in higher education. Doing so has given me respect for education as well as educators. The opportunities that I have had prepared me to teach online courses as well as tutoring elementary school children. It was a real pleasure working with terrific colleagues who proved that teamwork really does make tasks both rewarding and fun!”
Sandy played a critical role during the pandemic when she served on the USA contact tracing team. It was her responsibility to make sure all of the faculty, students, and staff followed the appropriate guidelines along with liaising with people throughout their isolation and quarantine period.
Knowledgeable and experienced, Sandy has been an important resource for faculty, staff, and students.
While Sandy will miss the lifelong friends that she made over the years at South, in retirement she plans to spend time with family, traveling, and getting more involved with animal rescue. One group, in particular, is close to her heart, Save A Stray.
We will miss you, Sandy. Enjoy retirement.
