April 2022

Brad's Bits

Golf Tournament-We hope everyone is planning to participate in our annual golf tournament - in at least one form or another. The tournament is set for Saturday, May 14th at Del Lago Golf Club. Registration begins and 7:00 am with tee time at 8:00. It is a scramble format, so you don’t have to be good to golf – just ready to enjoy a fun day.

The options to participate include:

  • Golf – either as a single (we will coordinate the foursomes) or bring your four-member team.
  • Sponsorship – numerous options are available at several levels. Call the office to get the details.
  • Silent Auction/Raffle donation – donate an item, service, event, etc. Proceeds benefit the scholarship fund.
  • SWAG Bag – donate an item to be included in the registration bag given to each golfer. We anticipate around 100 golfers.

Go to the Vail Chamber website to register. www.greatervailchamber.com

Bylaws change-In February, Chair of the Board, Rosemary Bright appointed a 7 member taskforce to review the bylaws of the Chamber. After numerous meetings, the taskforce is ready to present their recommendations to the full Board. Stay tuned.

Monthly Membership Lunch-April’s monthly lunch was hosted by Christ Lutheran Vail Church and sponsored by Hughes Federal Credit Union. Frank Knott, the President of Knott Development, presented the plans for Mosaic Quarter (the name of the project Knott Development is creating at Kino Sports Complex). This will be a 1,000,000 square foot, five-anchor building project. It is exciting to see this come to our area and the impact it will have on the Vail business community.

May’s lunch is scheduled for May 19th at Christ Lutheran Vail Church. Our keynote speaker will be Farhad Moghimi, Executive Director of the Pima Association of Governments (PAG). PAG is the metropolitan planning organization working on regional planning for transportation, water quality, air quality and economic vitality.

Incorporation Update-The community organization, Incorporate Vail Arizona?, continues to meet to evaluate the possibility of Vail becoming its own town. Their mission is “To explore with community input and participation the viability and interest of incorporating Vail.” There will be several community focus group meetings, including a business group meeting, to discuss the factors which will help make that decision.

Candidate Forum-A forum for all candidates in primary races will be hosted by the Chamber and the Vail Parent Network will be held on June 24th at the Vail Theatre of the Arts. Candidates for the State Legislature Districts 17 and 19, Governor, Secretary of State, Superintendent of Public Instruction, Arizona Corporate Commission, US Senate and US House of Representatives are being invited. The public will be invited to attend.

Supporting Legislation-The Chamber is supporting several bills in the State Legislature, including S1708 – Motion Picture Production Tax Credits and S1710 – Sports’ Tourism, Film Authority Appropriation. We believe both of these initiatives will have a major beneficial impact on the Vail area. Both S1708 and S1710 have been approved by the Full Senate and the House Appropriations Committee.

Tucson Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE)-The Board of Directors voted to send the following email to Tucson Mayor and Council – “Greater Vail Area Chamber of Commerce (GVACC) would like to request that Mayor, Council and Staff apply a 30-day extension of the public hearing to adopt an ordinance requiring the installation of electric vehicle stations. GVACC would like the opportunity to work with Staff to improve the City of Tucson’s EVSE ordinance requirements that is both pro-business and pro renewable energy. At their April 19th meeting, Tucson City Council voted to extend public comment period until their meeting in June or July.
