Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ!
We are excited to have a chance to get together in person! It will be outside and in cars, but it is something! We are going to host a drive-in night at church on Tuesday, August 18 at 7pm. We need to have a congregational meeting to elect our new elders and deacons, and this was a creative way to do that. We will have a time of worship, car friendly activities, and a brief meeting. We will have more information next week, but be sure to mark your calendars now! We will also have a few chairs set out for those who do not have a vehicle.
We are thrilled with our nominations for elders and deacons. Please thank and pray for these people who have been courageous enough to serve during a pandemic. For elders, Ken Woessner will be serving a second term, Jim Charron will be returning after a year off, and we have three new elders: Alex Frye, Kevin Hambleton, and Rob York. They have dedicated much time for the children, youth, adult education, and men's ministries, and we are grateful that God has uniquely gifted each of them to bless our church. For our deacons, Nancy Ettinger and Marcia Kelly will be serving second terms, and our new deacons are Janet Bodnar, Sharon Corey, Amanda Hasley, and Jennifer Miller. As with our new elders, these deacon nominees have demonstrated countless hours of faithful service to the church. We are so thankful for all of them!
This Sunday we are starting our August series on the Psalms. We will be doing some of our favorite psalms, including 46, 91, 121, and 139. This week we are kicking off with Psalm 1, a powerful contrast between a righteous person who loves the Word of God and bears fruit, and the unrighteous who are like chaff. As we study these psalms, we will also be helping you develop skills to study the Bible on your own. We will be looking at how to use a method called Inductive Bible study, which helps us ask basic questions about the text. What does it say? What does it mean? And what does it mean for my life?
By teaching this method as we study well-loved Psalms, we hope to equip you to feed deeply on the Word, whether you are in a small group or on your own. We want to see each of you become the kind of person Psalm 1 describes, who "is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither-whatever they do prospers" (Ps 1:3). Even in the midst of this time of spiritual and personal drought, may God grow your roots down deep to reach His living water, that you may bear fruit in season and flourish in His care.
Small Groups: Now is a great time to join a small group! This week, we are starting the series on our favorite Psalms. Study guides for the Psalms study are now available on our website, https://mlepc.org/psalms-study/We have small groups meeting online almost every day of the week, and we have groups for Tweeners, Middle School and High School, Young Adults, just women, just men, and coed groups. The Lamplighters Sunday School class is taking the month of August off, but they will be back in September.
