Assistant Professor Brian Garcia used his $10,000 RSCA (Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity) Award to develop a book manuscript that proposes applying urban planning solutions in Europe to improve cities and quality of life in Southern California.

The book will be based on lectures and source material Garcia collected to teach URP 4120 (Urban Design in Europe), and will address seven of the region's urban challenges: transportation and connecting people with places; inequality; environmental sustainability; housing provision; smart cities and creating cities of production rather than consumption; and public health. "California and Europe in particular have synergies in contemporary policy in environmental sustainability and also face similar crisis level challenges of housing affordability," Garcia said.

Research assistants Roger Carbajal and Eduardo Lomeli (both '22, B.URP) contributed additional material on inequality and public health during the COVID-19 pandemic. They also developed ideas for implementing transportation and environmental solutions for the City of Los Angeles and Los Angeles County, including an orbital rail system connecting suburbs; and green lung and green belt strategies building upon existing green spaces.

ARCHITECTURE
First-year studio instructor Sona Gevorkyan is the next president of the board of directors and leaders of the Association for Women in Architecture and Design. Gevorkyan is the founder of Sona Gevorkyan Architecture Office, a Los Angeles-based multidisciplinary practice.

The department's Master of Interior Architecture program was re-accredited by CIDA, and is currently in the process of a WSCUC review to allow the program to be offered online in perpetuity making it Cal Poly Pomona's second online program to be officially organized by the commission. Additionally, CSU Chancellor Joseph Castro approved the department's MS in Management of Architectural Practice for the University's Academic Master Plan. The program will be offered online for working professionals and anticipated to provide a path for young architects into management roles in the architecture, engineering, construction and owner-operated (AECO) industry. The program will be developed this year for a hoped-for launch in 2022-23.
Alison Pearlman portrait
ART
In Fall 2020 Princeton University invited Professor Alison Pearlman — one of the nation's first scholars to chronicle the history of 1980s American art to present her research in the two-day virtual conference Political Values, Market Values, Art Values: The Ethics of American Art in the 1980s. Her lecture, "Duck Tacos with a Side of Painting: Restaurants and the Los Angeles Art World of the 1980s," inspired the research and development of her next book, tentatively titled, "Meet Me at the West Beach Café: Art, Restaurants, and the Rebirth of L.A."

In narrative nonfiction, the book will reveal for the first time how the worlds of contemporary art and vanguard restaurants supported each other in 1980s Los Angeles. Pearlman will show how they advanced each other's interests at a transitional time for both in achieving world renown, and the ways their association gave rise to a new and influential aesthetic in restaurant design. At the heart of the story are a handful of restaurants — most importantly, West Beach Café in Venice and Michael's in Santa Monica — that became hubs of art-world social life, conduits of art institutional support, and sites of significant art exhibition.
