On Sunday, we gathered at the baptismal font for the sacrament of baptism. In that holy moment, parents, extended family, and the congregation as a whole made promises and sacred vows. The parents promised to raise their child in the church and to teach him so that he may come to a faith of his own. The family promised to encourage them in their Christian life, and all of us promised to surround him with a community of love and forgiveness, so that he may grow in his trust of God. We vowed to pray for them, so that he may be a true disciple that walks in the way that leads to life. It is a very sweet moment, but to fully consider the implications of the words we speak is a little daunting. We bear responsibility for our children's nurture and growth. It is in many ways our primary mission. It is why we have Sunday School, His Kids, VBS, Confirmation, Youth, and all the rest. It is about living into those promises.
In the blink of an eye, the baby I held Sunday will be on a list like the one below. He will line up to receive a diploma and step into the next stage of his life journey. This Sunday, we celebrate the milestone of high school graduation. These youth have been part of our church family, and teachers, mentors, and staff have joined parents and family to invest in their faith development. This is in no way the end of the journey. We celebrate their accomplishments and will continue to pray for them. Even as they go on to other things, Vineville will be a place to which they can always come home. Not all of the class was baptized in this place, but we count them as ours just the same. We celebrate with them and their families.
This Sunday, as part of the celebration, our Youth Minister, Rev. Mike Kinnebrew, will be preaching at both 9:00 a.m. & 11:00 a.m. The seniors and their families will be our guests at a brunch before the 11:00 a.m. service. As part of the 11:00 a.m. service, we will recognize the class and award the Vineville scholarships. I hope that you will plan to be with us to celebrate this milestone in the lives of our youth.
Peace,

The Oasis elementary choir will then regale you with the hilarious Simons Says: The Rockin’ Trial of Simon Peter.
