Our Response to COVID-19: Information
Globally
Good evening,

August 5, 2020 -- The COVID-19 pandemic is still accelerating its spread, having killed 711,108 victims while 19 million infections will have been confirmed within a few hours of this report’s publication. The World Heath Organization suspects the real number of infections is likely at least seven-fold, based on the disease’s fatality rate, now estimated by scholars to be 0.6%. The top three countries, with the widest infections, all reported over 50,000 new cases today, with India shy of peaking and Brazil passing the 60,000 mark for the third time in the last two weeks. Highlighted below are Argentina, with its highest single-day new cases report, and Bolivia with its most deadly single day since the virus was detected within its borders. Both countries have unusually high and still climbing positivity rates, severely low testing, indicative of a wide and uncontrolled community spread. Today 272,802 new infections were confirmed, and 6,877 lost their life to the emerging disease.

Coronavirus: Iran cover-up of deaths revealed by data leak

The number of deaths from coronavirus in Iran is nearly triple what Iran's government claims, a BBC Persian service investigation has found.

The government's own records appear to show almost 42,000 people died with Covid-19 symptoms up to 20 July, versus 14,405 reported by its health ministry.

The number of people known to be infected is also almost double official figures: 451,024 as opposed to 278,827.

The official numbers still make Iran the worst-hit in the Middle East.

In recent weeks, it has suffered a second steep rise in the number of cases.

The first death in Iran from Covid-19 was recorded on 22 January, according to lists and medical records that have been passed to the BBC. This was almost a month before the first official case of coronavirus was reported there..... READ MORE

Drop in new coronavirus cases in U.S. is muddied by reporting and testing snags | Washington Post

The number of new coronavirus cases recorded nationwide each day is dropping after peaking at more than 75,000 — but the declines are muddied by issues with testing and data-gathering in big states.

Populous California and Florida have the greatest changes over that period in raw numbers: Florida’s daily cases have tumbled to about 7,300 from a peak of nearly 12,000, while California surpassed 10,000 before dropping close to 7,000. Those two states also have reported major data snags.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) noted a big drop in daily cases, but officials warned a day later that issues with the reporting system were causing an undercount. Florida’s numbers, meanwhile, were disrupted by Hurricane Isaias, which led officials to suspend coronavirus testing at dozens of sites... READ MORE

TECHNICAL ISSUE HAS CALIFORNIA UNDER-REPORTING VIRUS CASES | The Business Journal
(AP) — A technical problem has caused a lag in California’s tally of coronavirus test results, casting doubt on the accuracy of recent data showing improvements in the infection rate and number of positive cases, and hindering efforts to track the spread, the state’s top health official said Tuesday.

Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly said in recent days that California has not been receiving a full count of tests conducted, or positive results, through electronic lab reports because of the unresolved issue, which he did not describe in detail. The state’s data page now carries a disclaimer saying the numbers “represent an underreporting of actual positive cases” per day.

The latest daily tally posted Tuesday showed 4,526 new confirmed positives, the lowest total in more than six weeks and a precipitous drop from the record nearly 13,000 reported two weeks ago. County health officials have posted notices on their sites advising of the lag and that a drop in cases might not paint a full picture.

Wendy Hetherington, Riverside County’s chief of epidemiology and program evaluation, said she believes hundreds of cases a day haven’t been reported in her county since late last week. The undercount impedes the ability to... READ MORE
