Superintendent's Message

Dear MPESD Community,

Welcome back from Presidents' Week! We hope everyone had a restful break!

In this newsletter, we are pleased to share highlights of a variety of student activities celebrating Black History Month and Lunar New Year. Our students enjoyed valuable classroom lessons, honoring the important contributions of diverse leaders and cultures. These celebrations represent a wonderful opportunity to teach our students and future leaders about the rich diversity we are privileged to have in our MPESD classrooms and community.

On behalf of our Board of Trustees and administration, our thanks to all of you for your enthusiastic participation. Together, we empower, inspire and unite to ensure a bright future for our students!

In community spirit,

Dr. Elida MacArthur
Superintendent

Reopening Update
Many of you may recall that on November 18, 2020 the Mt. Pleasant Elementary School District Board of Trustees made the decision to continue Distance Learning through Friday, February 19, 2021, at which point we would evaluate current conditions.

In a recent meeting, our Board of Trustees determined that Distance Learning will continue after February 19, 2021 until further notice. We will keep you informed of any changes as soon as possible.

Our District is currently working on the following efforts:

  1. We are reviewing newly released safety requirements from local and state agencies. Our staff is working to ensure a safe return that meets all safety mandates.
  2. As you will see below, a parent survey is now available that will help us determine student/parent readiness for a return to in-person learning. Please complete this survey as soon as possible.
  3. We will be determining the availability of staff for in-person learning in collaboration with our labor partners.

It is important to note that starting February 28, 2021, the Santa Clara County Public Health Department has expanded access to Covid-19 vaccinations to include workers in education, childcare and other key industries. This is a critical step on our journey towards in-person learning. Furthermore, Covid-19 case numbers are beginning to trend downward after a huge surge this holiday season. These are both promising, recent developments that we will continue to monitor and factor into our reopening planning efforts.
Parent Survey to Complete
Throughout this pandemic, we have collaborated closely with our parent community to implement Distance Learning. Your input and partnership are tremendously valued and appreciated.

It is time for another survey to determine how parents/caregivers are feeling about a return to in-person learning. We ask you to complete one survey per student as soon as possible.
Thank you for your participation. This information will be shared with our Board of Trustees to help determine next steps in our reopening planning.

Celebrating our Diversity
Our District is truly proud of the diverse community that it serves, representative of so many cultures, languages, and experiences.

Happy Lunar New Year
On February 12, 2021, our community celebrated Lunar New Year in new and exciting ways!

Did you know that Lunar New Year is the beginning of a calendar year whose months are moon cycles, based on the lunar calendar. Many members of our East San Jose community celebrate the Lunar New Year. This year is the Year of the Ox; those born on the Year of the Ox are considered hard working, reliable, honest and intelligent.

Here is a video featuring Valle Vista students celebrating Lunar New Year:
Mt. Pleasant STEAM Academy students from Ms. Nuñez's class also had a wonderful time learning about Lunar New Year.

Virtual Reading Series:
Kamala Harris, Rooted in Justice
This month it is our pleasure to feature Ms. Jessica Tejada, Student Advisor at Ida Jew Academy, reading, “Kamala Harris, Rooted in Justice.”

This book recounts the story of our Vice President Kamala Harris and her journey to the White House. Highlighting her immigrant roots and valuable learning lessons, this book, which features many beautiful illustrations, is the perfect selection for Black History Month! Enjoy!
Student Musicians Win $15,000
Tech Competition Prize
Mrs. Love and her students at August Boeger and Ida Jew Academy were recently featured on ABC7 for winning a $15,000 prize as semifinalists in a tech competition sponsored by Samsung! We are so proud!

The idea for their project began after Mrs. Love saw ABC7 Reporter David Louie’s story about JackTrip, a device that fixes the audio latency issue on the internet.
