President's Message
Greetings MHAO members-

Here it is August already and the dog days of summer are kicking in. I am hoping you all have managed to keep you and your four legged friends cool and safe during this hot and dry summer. But since it is summer, it is also time to enjoy one of the best things about this time of year..going to the Oregon State Fair!
The State Fair is back this year and so is its horse show. Once again there will be opportunity classes for Morgans in Western and Hunt/Saddle seat. The show dates for the Morgans are Friday, Sept 3rd and Saturday, Sept.4th. On Thursday, Sept 2, the show will have the Battle of the Breeds. Not sure if you all know this but the Morgans were very well represented at the 2019 Oregon State Fair and walked away with winning the Battle. I sat in the stands watching and overheard comments about the Morgans..so many around me said they didn't know that the breed was around. Come on MHAO members, lets show them what we got! Last I heard, the Arabian group was gunning to beat us so lets show up in force and win the title again! If you are interested, go to the Oregon State fair website under animals and look for the horse show info. If would like to join us, please contact Erin Silver at silvermesamorgans@msn.com or contact me at mike-kak@Q.com and let us know you will be joining us.

During the dates of the Morgan show, MHAO will also have a "stall" set up with promotional materials to share with the visiting public. This is our time to let our secret out about the best breed to own. I am looking for volunteers to work this booth with me. If you would like to help in promoting the Morgan, please contact me so that I can get a schedule for coverage. The one thing that is fun about showing and working at the fair is that the horse show schedule is not as hectic as our "A" rated shows and you still have time to enjoy the Fair. Come be a part of the fun.

As for happenings with MHAO, the time is rapidly approaching for our elections of new board members. The club is only as strong as its membership and its leaders. We need your help to make things happen! I would ask that you please consider being a part of the Board and help develop programs for ALL members to enjoy! Very soon the call for nominations will be announced... If you or someone that you know has an interest, please contact me.

Stay safe, stay cool and keep sharing the love for your Morgan horse with the world!

Maybe Showing Is Or Is Not Your Thing. Do You Do Other Types of Riding Or Driving With Your Morgan Horse?
Actually, all your time in the saddle or driving anywhere except when you are in front of a judge at a Morgan show counts for this program. Even all your time riding or driving at an open show or any other kind of event whether in front of a judge or not. All practice time, trail riding, beach riding, arena riding, riding or driving for fun, lesson time, exercising of your horse while riding or driving, tooling around the neighborhood..... everything counts.
Once enrolled, you will not need to enroll again as long as you maintain your membership in MHAO. Turn in a log showing your hours riding or driving your horse. Patches will be awarded at the MHAO Award Banquet. Wear them proudly or put them on your saddle blanket so other people will know you are riding or driving a Morgan horse.

Click here to download more information, get enrolled, or to use our log form to turn in your time.

Although the US dressage team has claimed medals in five of the last seven Olympics, this marks their best finish in the Grand Prix Special since the 1948 Games, where they also won silver.

Tansy Ragwort
It Is Spreading Again In Oregon
Tansy ragwort, a biennial weed in the sunflower family, has made a big comeback in parts of western Oregon, especially in the foothills where livestock grazing is prevalent. It is a regional problem, killing thousands of livestock animals — mostly cattle and horses, and contaminating pastures and hay.

For more information and ways to get it under control, visit the OSU Extension Service by clicking here.
Farm Work
“Farm work doesn’t make you stronger. It doesn’t make you anything. It reveals you.

There’s gym strong and then there’s farm strong. They’re mutually exclusive.

The toughest women you’ll ever meet spend their days on a farm.

There are more uses for twine than you can possibly imagine. You can tie up a hole in a slow feeder, fashion a tail strap for a horse’s blanket, mend a broken fence and use it as a belt.
“Well that certainly didn’t go as planned,” is one thing you’ll say quite a bit.

Control is a mere illusion. The thought that you have any, at any given time, is utterly false.

Sometimes sleep is a luxury. So are lunch and dinner. And brushing your hair.
If you’ve never felt your obliques contract, then you’ve never tried stopping an overly full wheelbarrow of horse manure from tipping over sideways. Trust me, you’ll find muscles that you never knew existed on the human skeleton to prevent this from happening.

When one of the animals is ill, you’ll go to heroic lengths to minimize their discomfort.

Their needs come first. In summer heat and coldest winter days. Clean water, clean bed, and plenty of feed. Before you have your first meal, they all eat.

When you lose one of them, even though you know that day is inevitable, you still feel sadness, angst and emotional pain from the top of your head to the tips of your toes. And it’s a heaviness that lingers even though you must regroup and press on.
You’ll cry a lot. But you’ll never live more fully. You’ll remain present no matter what because you must. There is no other option.

You’ll ask for so many miracles and hold out hope until the very last.

You will, at least once, face-plant in the manure pile.

You’ll find yourself saying things like, “we have maybe twenty minutes of daylight left to git ‘er done” whilst gazing up at a nonspecific place in the sky.

You’ll become weirdly obsessive about the weather.

You’ll go out in public wearing filthy clothes and smelling of dirt, sweat and poop. People will look at you sideways and krinkle their noses but you won’t care.

Your entire day can derail within ten seconds of the rising sun.
You can wash your coveralls. They won’t look any cleaner, but they will smell much nicer.

Farm work is difficult in its simplicity.

You’ll always notice just how beautiful sunrises and sunsets really are.

Should you ever have the opportunity to work on a farm, take the chance! You will never do anything more satisfying in your entire life.

Well, that about sums it up, folks!”

Horse Tests Positive for EHV-1 at Sonoma Horse Park
A horse that attended a show at Sonoma Horse Park in Petaluma, CA has been confirmed positive for Equine Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy (EHM) secondary to EHV-1. Though the horse did not compete in any events, it was transported to a veterinary hospital at the onset of neurological signs. All horses from the exposed barn are being removed from the premises and isolated under quarantine at their home premises.
Veterinary sources report a horse that tested positive died the evening of July 24th, 2021.

Though the horses from the specific barn have been removed to quarantine, the exposure happened as early as July 19th. With events such as Junior Hunter Finals ending Wednesday the 21st, many horses unknowingly left the property to move to other horse shows including Blenheim (San Juan Capistrano, CA), Kentucky (Lexington, KY), Traverse City (Williamsburg, MI), etc.

Morgan Reining & Morgan Ranch Rule Change Proposals
This year, there are two member-proposed rule change proposals going through the AMHA Rule Forum Process. Traditionally, AMHA has each Regional Horse Show host a Rule Forum to allow members to obtain the pending rule change proposal information and provide feedback.

Six (6) upcoming shows will hold Rule Forums and we are specifically asking those that compete in Morgan Reining and Ranch Riding to provide their input as the two proposals focus on those sections of the Morgan division in the USEF Rulebook. Please click Read More for details.
Please check the show schedules or with individual show offices to obtain the date and location of each of these forums. AMHA thanks you in advance for participating in this important governance process!

For reference, the pending proposals are provided here.
ADS Rule Change Comment Period Now Open!
The American Driving Society, Inc. (ADS) annual Member Comment Period on the Rule Change Proposals for the 2022 Rulebook is now open. All ADS Members are automatically added to this Forum. As you probably know, the ADS updates and republishes the Rulebook annually. This allows for members to submit their suggested changes to the Rulebook, and those changes are considered by the technical committees and may be moved forward as Rule Change Proposals. Those proposals are then put up for a 30-day member comment period. Since this year the RCPs are being posted on August 2, the comment period will close on September 1.

For the entire ADS letter, instructions and links, please click on “Read More” below.

What is Hoof Print Marketing?
Hoof Print Marketing stemmed from the overwhelming response from the equestrian online world to learn more about Pinterest. It is, first and foremost, a space for the equine community to come and learn about how to grow their presence online. Hoof Print Marketing offers free tools to help you with your online horse business and/or website, including articles about Pinterest marketing and content creation and free downloadable guides.

For those who want to dig deeper, Hoof Print Marketing also offers Courses to give you step-by-step teaching to set up and optimize a Pinterest account and strategy that serves your target audience.

I also offer a suite of one-on-one Pinterest Management & Copywriting Services for those who see the value in Pinterest, but need to focus their time on other aspects of their business.

Values: A Client-First Approach
At Hoof Print Marketing, I believe that when we put the client first, integrity and excellent service follows suit. Not only is this a value of Hoof Print Marketing and its services, but also of the teaching that you will find here. In order to use Pinterest successfully, you need to put your target client first. Because of this, Pinterest’s best practices are also cornerstone to Hoof Print Marketing. If what we do serves the Pinterest user well, it will also serve our businesses well.

As horse business owners, I firmly believe that the client-first approach is the only way to long-term success. If this fits with your personal business philosophy, then you have come to the right place.

Thank you again for your interest in Hoof Print Marketing! I would love to hear from you! Feel free to reach out to me anytime through the Contact Form.

Learn How to Make Pinterest ROCK Your Equine Business!
Most Pinterest users are women under the age of 40. Not surprisingly, that includes equestrians searching for horse related content. Despite the demand for equine content, there are still so few horse businesses, publications, online stores and content creators who take advantage of Pinterest as a marketing outlet to grow business traffic.

“HOOF PRINT MARKETING IS HERE TO HELP WITH TEACHING, TOOLS AND SUPPORT THAT SPECIFICALLY ADDRESS THE NEEDS OF THE EQUINE COMMUNITY”
Equestrians are coming to Pinterest to learn, shop, and be inspired. Hoof Print Marketing is here to help you maximize the Pinterest opportunity with teaching, tools and support that specifically address the needs of the equine community.
Meet Lindsey
Hey there! Thank you for stopping in at Hoof Print Marketing. If we haven’t met yet, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Lindsey, and we probably share that gene that makes us pretty crazy about horses.
I am a Pinterest Marketer and Copywriter that specifically works with horse businesses and equestrian online publications. I currently live in North Idaho, USA, with my husband, where we spend admittedly too much of our free time searching for the perfect cup of coffee.

Having ridden horses close to my whole life, I am well acquainted with the specific needs of the Equestrian community. That’s why I’m grateful for you. Why? Because chances are, you are either a content creator (writer, publisher, video creator) or an equine business owner who serves a specific need for a product or service in the equine world.

I’d love to have a coffee chat and see how the Hoof Print Marketing Team can serve your specific needs!

Mara Lin Tomlin & Everett Robinson
Hi, my name is Mara. My partner, soon to be husband, is Everett. Everett has been taking care of me for the past 4 months while I try to fight a very painful intestinal infection that my body just could not beat.
While I was bedridden and Everett was taking care of me, he FINALLY got into see a specialist and have tests done that he had been asking the VA to do for over one year. Come to find out he has a large mass on his left kidney with 6 smaller masses broken off! CANCER

The next CAT scan appointment confirmed masses in his lungs as well.

Next came the house and property we live on going up for sale with no notice. The land owners and realtor demanded animals off the land immediately for property clean up.

We are now fighting with the VA to pay the specialist bills, loosing animals, and our home. We have amazing friends helping with the large animals for now!

The medical bills, housing, and animals are adding up. We are proud people, but we know when we can't do everything on our own. Now is that time. I need my future husband to get the treatment he deserves! The VA does not treat the men who served our country with respect! Cancer can be cured! Any small amount of help is very much appreciated.

Bless you,
Mara & Everett

Something New To Try!
Congratulations to Melissa Bullard and Crown La Reign who recently gave Equine Trail Sports a try.
Melissa Bullard and Crown La Rein competed at the trials July 10-11 at Glenhaven Farm in Salem, and came home with plenty of awards. This is a new equestrian sport area and other Morgans are doing well in it, too. It is a great test of the relationship between horse and rider - as well as the horse's confidence and ability to navigate a number of obstacles both in the arena and out on the trail.

This is a great new sport for those that want to have fun with their Morgans, enjoy, compete, etc. Northwest Morgans has set aside 3/4 acre of rough unused land that Melissa is making into a fabulous obstacle trail training course.

What is it?

Enjoy a variety of Trail Challenges, Obstacle Courses, and Recreation Rides in a fun and family friendly environment. Enjoy access to private ranch lands and beautiful public parks while bonding with your horse. Create friendships with best friends you have yet to meet. Events are open to all breeds of horses, donkeys and mules.
