Foster Access, Equity and Employability Through Coaching

Yesterday, we as a nation honored Martin Luther King Jr. and his legacy of work towards the goal of true equity. Although the task he set for us is far from complete, coaches and educators have an opportunity to help students to graduate with an equity mindsetan inclusive lens, and employability skills the market demands for increased opportunity and financial remuneration. Dr. Jane Gates of the Connecticut State College and Universities, in her article How Colleges Can Increase Equity Through Employability Standards, addresses the concern that a focus on employability may come at a cost to the higher education experience.  She stresses that "...embedding employability into our curricula does not come at the expense of a well-rounded liberal arts education. Rather, it helps us draw clearer connections between what students are learning and what skills employers demand. Indeed, this is especially important among liberal arts programs, which are rife with the kinds of essential skills students must develop to compete in a knowledge-based economy."

Coaches have an opportunity to draw connections among self-directed learning, ambition, access, equity and professional skills with questions that encourage students to make choices that increase their employability while amplifying their learning.

Here are some examples:

  • When students are unmotivated to do the work in a gen ed course that doesn't interest them: "What does this course require of you that makes you, or could make you, a desirable employee?"

  • When students resist engaging with instructors and peers: "How might connecting with your instructor/TA/fellow students build communication skills that you will use in the workplace?"

  • When a student is working or has worked: "If you were a hiring manager, who among your fellow students would you hire and why? If your instructor were a hiring manager, do you think they would hire you based on your performance in this class? Why or why not -- and what might you change if not?"

  • When students who are employees doubt their ability to perform academically: "Compare the working you to the student you. What about you as an employee can help you operate more effectively as a learner?"

LifeBound's February 3-day Inclusive Coaching Training offers an opportunity to up your game to deliver both equity and employability skills. In this course, you’ll learn how to help your students:

  • Develop an inclusive, growth mindset
  • Communicate with impact and empathy
  • Identify, set, and maintain healthy boundaries at school, at work, and in life
  • Build self- and situational awareness
  • Practice mindfulness and self-reflection
