Board of Directors Profile - Sue Desjarlais
|
|
Introducing Sue Desjarlais
- President (since 2021) and a Board member since 2014
- Semi-retired, Councilor of the Town of LaSalle since 2006
Sue Desjarlais was first introduced to Community Living Essex County when she began volunteering at our Charity Gift Wrapping booth at Devonshire Mall a few years ago. She met some great people - staff, people supported, and family members. Shoppers were generous and interested to learn about the charity. Sue learned how important a fundraiser it is for Community Living Essex County, in addition to being a great service to tired shoppers. A win-win.
Sue's father was a Polio survivor and lived with a physical disability so Sue and her siblings saw first-hand how challenging life could be. People with an intellectual disability experience challenges regularly and she wanted an opportunity to help change perceptions. She has learned so much from the people supported by Community Living Essex County, and loves cheering for and advocating for full inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities in our communities. Sue believes we are making major strides all the time and wants to be part of that mindset change.
Sue enjoys her job as a Councilor for the Town of LaSalle, as she's constantly learning. Residents of the town, along with their concerns and wishes for their community, teach and challenge her, and her previous job with Bell as a client representative taught her to listen and respect different opinions.
A few other facts about Sue:
- She enjoys baking and reading
- Her pet peeve is bad manners
- She shies away from chain restaurants and loves a great burger in a pub or excellent dining
- She loves volunteering

Ensemble is Searching for Volunteers
|
|
Ensemble is a parent-directed resource for families caring for a child with a disability that provides support from birth through adulthood. The name, Ensemble, is French for “together” and was chosen for the strength and resiliency found in the connections built between families and within the community.
Ensemble inspires possibilities for children by promoting family leadership so that families thrive and become active members in the community.
Ensemble was founded in 2000 by two moms whose lives have been affected by their children’s diagnosis of a disability. These moms understood the importance of connecting to others as the first step in helping families cope with the challenges of raising a child with a disability.
We meet ONCE a month via telephone or Zoom at 7pm for approximately 1 hour. By joining our committee, you will be able to openly share experiences and make suggestions. These opinions will provide valuable family perspectives everyone will benefit from.
Please consider making your voice heard.
