 Governor Evers' mask mandate has been extended until Nov. 21, 2020. The School District of Baraboo would like to remind our families that per school district policy, face coverings will continue to be required while on school premises after Nov. 21, 2020, and until further notice.
The District is requiring face coverings for students 5-years of age and older while on school premises. We ask that parents/guardians also wear face coverings while on school property when dropping off or picking up students.
Please note, the District is currently using the following definition of "face covering:"
"Face Covering" means a piece of cloth or other material that is worn to cover the nose and mouth completely. A "face covering" includes but is not limited to a bandana, a cloth face mask, a disposable or paper mask, a neck gaiter, or a religious face covering. A "face covering" does not include face shields, mesh masks, masks with holes or openings, or masks with vents.

Flag of the Ho-Chunk Flies High Over Baraboo Schools
|
On Oct. 9, the School District of Baraboo held a Ho-Chunk Flag Raising Ceremony at Al Behrman Elementary, East Elementary, Gordon L. Willson Elementary, North Freedom Elementary, West Kindergarten Center and Jack Young Middle School.
The idea originated with members of Baraboo High School's Indigenous Students United (ISU) club, who also helped plan the BHS Thunderbird Day of Peace and Ho-Chunk Flag Raising Ceremony in the Fall of 2019 at the high school, as a way to celebrate the Ho-Chunk culture, language, history and their importance in the Baraboo area. Our schools are located on Ho-Chunk seeded land; and our symbol is the Thunderbird, a Ho-Chunk legendary creature of power, strength, and peace.
The District's Assistant Director of Educational Services and Equity Jori Ruff and BHS math teacher and ISU advisor Sarah Roth facilitated in planning and organizing the event. ISU members created an educational video to share with the elementary and middle school students. The video was shared the week of the ceremony, and explained the symbols and meaning in the Ho-Chunk flag. The ISU members also taught the elementary and middle school students Ho-Chunk words and their meanings.
 Members of ISU were invited to participate in six flag raising ceremonies on Oct. 9. The ceremonies were broadcasted live via Google Meets so that students could watch the ceremony from their classroom at their respective schools.
The ceremonies were led by Joe WhiteEagle, a member of the Ho-Chunk Nation, the Sanford White Eagle American Legion Post 556 and a Baraboo High School graduate. All six flags were blessed in the traditional Ho-Chunk language, then attached to the flagpole alongside the American flag. Both flags were raised in unity to the sounds of traditional Ho-Chunk drumming, and will continue to fly high over our Baraboo Schools.

FFA Students Don't "Chicken Out" When Faced with Hands-On Exam

Baraboo High School FFA student Megan Faivre is raising poultry on her family farm. She shared her poultry with the students in Ms. Puntney's Small Animal Care class so that they could practice performing physical exams. The students received hands-on, real world experience without "chickening out."

Celebrando la Herencia y Cultura Hispana
|
National Hispanic Heritage Month is observed from September 15 to October 15, to celebrate the history, cultures and contributions of people whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America.
The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. This event was enacted into law on August 17, 1988.
Though today is the last day of National Hispanic Heritage Month, learning about Hispanic heritage and culture can continue year-round. Here are a few suggestions on how to learn more:
- Learn more about Hispanic festivals such as Fiestas Patrias, Cinco de Mayo, and Día de los Muertos.
- Learn about individuals who have made contributions to American life such as Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, Representative Romualdo Pacheco, and Senator Octaviano Larrazolo.
- Explore Latin music online with the Smithonian ¡Que Viva la Música Latina! Click here to visit the website.
- Discover Hispanic artists such as Frida Kahlo, Salvador Dalí, Joan Miró, Diego Rivera, and Pablo Picasso by viewing the Smithsonian Latino Art and Artists collection. Click here to visit the website.
- Expand your culinary palate and skills by trying new recipes such as Paella (Spain), Chuchitos (Guatemala), Pupusas (El Salvador) mole sauce (México), or Lomo Saltado (Perú).

Virtual First Graders Become Publishers

The virtual first graders in Ms. Beckwith's class worked on publishing their writing. They recorded their writing in the clips app and then published to the Seesaw blog where they were able to listen to others works. They then commented on other students' stories.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: Susana Guerrero
|
This week the Baraboo High School Senior Spotlight is on Susana Guerrero!
Susana is an active member of the Baraboo High School Social Justice Leadership Council, working hard to make our district more equitable. She has been chosen as one of four students to represent Baraboo High School at the Social Justice Leadership Council in Dane County.
In addition to her passion for work involving equity, Susana is involved in several clubs at Baraboo High School, including the ECO Club where they focus on bringing awareness to the BHS student body and community at large on the dangers of climate change. Susana works hard and plays just as hard as a member of the Girls Soccer Team in the Spring, as well as managing the Boys Soccer Team in the Fall.
Proud of her Hispanic heritage, it is only fitting to feature this senior during National Hispanic Heritage Month!

As the cool weather is arriving, so is the Baraboo High School FFA Fruit and Wreath Sale!

The order deadline is Monday, October 26th. Wreath pick up will be October 23 or October 24 and fruit pick up will be the first or second week of December (the exact date will be communicated closer to when the company creates the delivery route).

JYMS Students Paint Pumpkins in TA

Ms. Dahl's Teacher Advisory (TA) at Jack Young Middle School got in the spirit of fall by painting mini-pumpkins this week!
TA is a regularly scheduled period of time, typically in the morning, when JYMS teachers meet with small groups of students for the purpose of advising them on academic, social, or future-planning issues.
Advisory programs are important because they give students time that is specifically designed to build school relationships and skills which help them succeed. Students and teachers work together to build positive relationships , focus on achievement success, and complete Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) character education activities.
The objective of TA is for students and teachers to gain a sense of community and build positive relationships. Students will stay with their TA teacher and classmates for an extended period of time, typically a full school year.

 Last month, Baraboo High School students learned about the Wisconsin Department of Justice Office of School Safety's newest school safety tool - Speak Up, Speak Out (SUSO). SUSO is a comprehensive, one-stop place to turn to with your concerns regarding school safety. A facet of the Resource Center is the threat reporting system. The SUSO threat reporting system is available 24/7 and is free to all.Students, parents, school staff and community members can submit a school safety concern, by downloading the SUSO app (Android and iOS), visiting speakup.widoj.gov or by calling 1-800-MY-SUSO-1 . Resource Center staff work around-the-clock to respond to reports and to deploy a response locally by communicating directly with school administrators, law enforcement and counselors.Threat reporting systems - or tip lines - are recommended for use by the United States Secret Service when developing comprehensive school violence prevention plans. Tip lines are used to identify threats to schools, and other daily safety concerns students encounter, such as bullying, drug use, suicidal thoughts and more. For more information, click here.

 The School District of Baraboo has created a COVID-19 Dashboard (click to view) to provide our families with information on the state of the COVID-19 virus in our District and how this data impacts decision-making for school/classroom closures.
The District will update the number of confirmed cases, recovered cases and active cases in the District, as well as the percentage of students and staff who are currently absent from school with COVID-like symptoms or quarantined due to possible exposure. This information will be updated weekly on Mondays, unless there is a drastic change in which case the District will notify families via Infinite Campus.
The District Dashboard provides information about the results of COVID-19 reported by Sauk County Public Health (SCPH).
Please note that due to our obligation to protect student and staff confidentiality, we cannot share details about these cases. Identifying staff and students by grade level or classroom jeopardizes our ability to keep this information confidential. If members of our school community feel we are not doing our best to keep personal information confidential, we run the risk of families no longer sharing important health information with us. We need accurate data to make the best decisions for our students, staff and community.
District-wide communications will be added to the right-hand side of the Dashboard by the date they were sent. Communications sent to individual families, classrooms, grade levels, or buildings will not be added to the Dashboard as those communications are specific to the individuals who receive them. An example of this is a COVID low-risk exposure letter (see link for example), which is sent if an individual tests positive for COVID and attends school/school events while infected. This type of letter will be sent through Infinite Campus to parents/guardians of identified students in shared spaces/classrooms or an entire school population who are not deemed close contacts.
The COVID-19 Dashboard will also host links on the right-hand side to help your family stay current on District policies and procedures, including the Student/School Staff Symptoms and Exposure Protocol, the District Face Covering Response Protocol, and the Sauk County Public Health - School COVID-19 Protocol.

Reminder: Wash Your Face Coverings!
|
 In-person families, please remember to wash cloth masks and other face coverings regularly. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends the following for how to wash face coverings.
Washing machine
- You can include your cloth face covering with your regular laundry.
- Use regular laundry detergent and the warmest appropriate water setting for the cloth used to make the face covering.
Washing by hand
- Check the label to see if your bleach is intended for disinfection. Some bleach products, such as those designed for safe use on colored clothing, may not be suitable for disinfection.
- Use bleach containing 5.25%-8.25% sodium hypochlorite. Do not use a bleach product if the percentage is not in this range or is not specified.
- Ensure the bleach product is not past its expiration date. Never mix household bleach with ammonia or any other cleanser.
- Ensure adequate ventilation.
- Prepare a bleach solution by mixing:
- 5 tablespoons (1/3rd cup) of 5.25%-8.25% bleach per gallon of room temperature water or
- 4 teaspoons of 5.25%-8.25% bleach per quart of room temperature water
- Soak the mask in the bleach solution for 5 minutes.
- Discard the bleach solution down the drain and rinse the mask thoroughly with cool or room temperature water.
- Make sure to completely dry the mask after washing.

Friday Folders Are Going Virtual

 The School District of Baraboo's Friday Folders are going virtual for the 2020-21 school year!
Information from non-district entities, like club sports, library programming, parks and rec information, etc., can now be accessed in a digital Friday Folder by clicking here. Friday Folder submissions from previous weeks will be archived in this folder as well, so if you want to reference it you can go to that week's folder and view it again!
This is a safety measure for in-person students to limit the number of papers received from outside sources, and will allow students who are attending school via the Virtual Learning Model to access to the information.
Please note: Important school-related information directly from the School District of Baraboo will still come home in Friday Folders, and virtual teachers will provide this information directly to their students.
