Farewell to Lee Priory

It has, as they say, been a journey… the conservation of the architectural elements from Lee Priory, circa 1785, has certainly been that and more. I do not, however, regret the time spent and the great people met, all of whom contributed to bringing back for future generations the beauty and craftsmanship of this important 18th Century ‘Gothik’ interior.

There does though come a time when one must realise one is not a museum and also not forget that one is a dealer, and the idea is to sell as well as acquire wonderful objects. It is then on Thursday 12th November in a live online auction that the elements from Lee Priory, designed by James Wyatt – one of our Architect greats, in the form of bookcases and doors that make up the Lee Priory Ante-Room, and an extra wonderful door in an alcove, will be sold. I do, however, still have here at Taddington the ceiling, which even the mighty Christie’s could not take on! I hope then to offer the ceiling to the purchaser of the elements to keep the room together – or maybe not… it is now in the capable hands of the excellent specialist Peter Horwood and his Christie's team.

I have by way of saying goodbye attached below the wonderful article written by Peter Lindfield on Lee Priory and a link to the sale for those who are interested.

I will return to you soon with some fine garden antiques various, news of our re-energised website, new garden ‘Collections’ catalogue and later an exhibition of Modern British Art in January – we have I promise not been idle in these days of lockdown!

With all my best regards and keep well.
