According to the Houston Police Department, a burglary is reported every 15 seconds in the United States. This crime usually, but not always, involves theft. Of all the major criminal offenses, residential burglary is the most common. That's why Westchase District vice president of public safety Don McKinney wants the District's residents and businesses to know that there are steps they can take to increase home safety. McKinney's video is the third installment in a special Public Safety Video Series that he has presented and shared. Previous topics, covering burglary of a motor vehicle and robbery prevention, can also be viewed on Westchase District's official YouTube channel.

The latest aerial footage of Woodchase Park captures the progress of the park's many features.

A long pedestrian walkway, row of high-rise live oaks, performance pavilion roof and an intriguing area (future dog park) that appears in an amoeba-shaped outline are noticeable in the latest Woodchase Park drone footage filmed by D.L. Meacham, the construction firm building the park. A major milestone was reached when D.L. Meacham successfully relocated 17 high-rise oak trees from Westheimer Road medians to the park. The trees, which were planted 15 years ago on Westheimer, had outgrown their environment and are getting a new home at the park.

Sneed Dog Park Grand Opening Festivities Are a Hit with Pups and People



Sneed Dog Park officially opened next to Sneed Elementary School's playground on Pagewood Lane. A large, enthusiastic crowd of people and furry friends attended a Grand Opening Celebration last month. The fun included a ribbon cutting, pet family portraits, a doggy costume contest and a doggy tricks contest. Westchase District board chair Harry Greenblatt served as emcee for the festivities. 

Many thanks to sponsor support that made the event even more festive. Petco's Westchase Shopping Center store donated dental chew bones, free nail trimmings and rabies vaccination cards; the Houston Humane Society brought pet adoption experts and mascots Lizzie and Roo; Blair Johnson Wellness presented the grand prize for the doggy costume; and Zoes Kitchen gave away a free meal for four grand prize for doggy tricks. Sneed Dog Park is open at 4 p.m. to dusk Monday to Friday and dawn to dusk on Saturday and Sunday.

The Westchase District Farmers Market is the place to eat. If the sweet aroma of freshly made crepes doesn't lure you, then maybe other tantalizing items will from new vendors who recently joined the market.  

Arts and Crepes food truck bistro transports you to a Paris street without traveling to France. A delicious sizzle emanates from an open customer service window on this poppy orange food truck. Across the way, extraordinary Italian food from Kaylie's Trattoria makes what to buy to eat at the market an even tougher choice. Kaylie's cooks all their menu items using a mobile kitchen set up for grilled sandwiches, pasta and Bolognese-sauce made on site.

Check out market newcomer Rise Bake Lab's oatmeal crown pies, Nutella smores bars, or chocolate covered strawberry brownies.

Although not a new face to the market, JJ Sweets Delights puts an interesting take on push-up popsicles. The hand-crafted sweets maker, baker and caterer extraordinaire introduced a cake version of this favorite treat. JJ Sweets Delights plans a new flavor every month. 


 


Hoop it Up: Register your Team for Quillian Center's Corporate Basketball League, Play Begins March 25


Since your company's basketball talent has been cooped up most of last year, it's time to make a fast break for Quillian Center's Corporate Basketball League.

Your squad is eager to make its return to the court again. Shirley in accounting can hit three pointers from outside the paint while Juan in operations has a quick lay up that's hard to stop. There's no better forward than Bob in sales who knows the competition will be as stiff as real world business deals. 

Registration is currently underway for Quillian Center's Corporate Basketball League. The team fee is $600.

Torchy's Tacos Has a Deal for National Girl Scout Day on March 12


National Girl Scout Day is March 12. You can support the Girl Scouts by buying America's favorite cookies, minty Thin Mints or gooey Tagalongs wherever you see them being sold. The Girl Scouts and the cookies they sell are a national treasure much like the cool merit badges they sport which signify various forms of accomplishment. Torchy's Tacos wants members of this hard working organization to know that any Girl Scout in uniform or troop showing their badge will get 15 percent off of their orders this Friday.
