What's Up KEA?

Hybrid Model Communication

It has come to the attention of KEA that the KSD Communications Team is sending our community members information about possibly transitioning to a hybrid model. We understand that surveys are also going out to students and families. It is unfortunate, and quite frankly disrespectful, that district employees were not given any kind of prior notice that these messages were going out. This strategy creates more distrust between district level admin and building staff.

We can not control the behavior of district leadership, but we can control the working conditions should the hybrid model come to fruition. KEA has created a survey to inform our position when it comes to opening the buildings. Please take a few minutes to answer this survey.

Teacher Absences

As KSD and KEA bargained the MOU for online learning, KEA continuously brought up the issue of guest teachers.  The topic was continuously pushed down the road.  In the end, we finally agreed that teachers would enter their absences into AESOP, leave a link to the Canvas page, and then students would work independently completing the assignments from Canvas.  We believed that door was closed. Until...        a couple of principals decided to reopen the door and voluntell their staff to cover classes.  HR gave them the go ahead citing the current CBA allows for class coverage.  Now we have several principals forcing teachers to cover classes.

If admin would have done their homework, class coverage is a very small section of the paragraph in the CBA.  There are certain conditions that must be met before principals can require class coverage.  First, volunteers must be requested.  Second, a good faith effort to fill the position with a guest teacher must occur.  KSD has several trained guest teachers willing and able to work.  Third, a rotation schedule must be created and posted at each building.  And finally, teachers asked to cover a class will be given 24 hours' notice if the absence was entered more than 24 hours in advance.

KEA has gathered a lot of evidence suggesting that buildings have not met these conditions before requiring class coverage.  We have brought our concerns to HR.  However, we were not able to achieve a resolution.  If we are unable to come to agreement by Friday evening, KEA will be filing a class-action grievance against the district
