NEW YEAR MESSAGE
As we get settled into 2023, the outlook for work looks promising. All indications are that there will be sustained demand for construction services in the GTA as major infrastructure projects continue throughout the year. This means that we can expect a positive employment picture for our members. Calls for labour have been coming in steadily so members should ensure that they are registered on the unemployed list when laid off and keep their contact numbers up to date so dispatching can be done promptly. My hope is that the new year brings good health and prosperity for our members and their families!

TRADES WOMEN BUILD NATIONS CONFERENCE 2022
From Oct. 27-30, Local 30’s Women’s Committee members attended the Trades Women Build Nations Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. History was made with 3,300 attendees from all over North America, the largest gathering of tradeswomen in the world. Our members represented Local 30 as we marched in the banner parade and participated in informative and relevant workshops. It was an empowering experience being surrounded by fellow Sisters and Allies, all coming together to support and uplift women in the trades.

Local 30’s Women’s Committee convey its appreciation to the Executive Board and fellow Brothers and Sisters who approved our participation in this amazing event. Thank you!
TRADE SHOW
Local 30 participated in a trade show at the end of October 2022. Kids from Grades 7-12 visited our booth, asking questions and making toolboxes and roses out of metal.
LONG-TERM AWARDS DINNER
On November 5, 2022, Local 30 hosted its Long-Term Awards Dinner. Local 30 member Peter Witruk attended the event and had this to say:
“Everyone was dressed impeccably and there were smiles everywhere as members were able to reconnect with old work mates. I was at a table that had one of the 60-year recipients, Leslie Szabo, and his wife. Leslie entertained with stories of his career, of building his home in the late 1950s and even provided some advice on how to deal with arthritis – soak raisins in gin for two days and then eat 9 raisins a day!”

MEMBER STORIES
SO WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN?
From bands to electronic projects to graphic arts, our members have a variety of pursuits and interesting hobbies! Pat Martin, Local 30 member since 1999, skydives in his spare time. Here’s his story:

I’ve been skydiving for over a year and a half now. My first jump was very fast, so I don’t remember too much – it was a mental overload. But, I remember that I wanted to do it again. I got into skydiving through a good friend of mine – when he first started, he told me if I wanted to I should lose weight since I was too big. My mom was not thrilled about it at first, but she sees how much I love it and doesn’t mind anymore. My first solo jump was the scariest for me, because I wasn’t sure what to expect when flying the canopy for the first time – the instructors are only with you when you are in free fall, so once your parachute opens you are on your own except for someone telling you what to do over a radio.

My future dreams and aspirations are to eventually work professionally in the skydiving industry as a tandem skydiving instructor and a PFF (progressive free fall) instructor. I would say that if skydiving is on your list, or even if it isn’t, you should give it some thought! It is the most fun you can have and an experience that you cannot explain to anybody – you should try it at least once in your life.
Jumping with my son this year at Skydive Ontario was the most rewarding experience I’ve had so far – and I hope these experiences never stop!

I am sure I am not the only one with a unique hobby, what do you do with your extra day off?
