Budget Discussion

November 10th @ 7pm

The Deacons, Treasurer and Elders have been working on preparing the 2021 Budget for congregational approval. Click here to preview the budget. We will be having an open discussion of the proposed budget via Zoom next Tuesday at 7pm. All are encouraged to attend. This meeting will give you an opportunity to hear the highlights of the 2021 church budget and to ask questions. Final approval of the budget will be at a later date.

"Work Out Your Salvation" by Pastor Rob

The Apostle Paul writes, “Work out your salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, enabling you both to will and work for his good pleasure” (Philippians 2:11-12). Paul knew salvation was a gift from God, not something the diligent believer could achieve through works. However, once the gift was received, Paul also knew, as we need to understand, that it does take great effort to live as a saved person. Following Jesus is free in the sense that he welcomes all without qualification. Free? Yes. Cheap? No. Following Jesus requires to give our all in developing as disciples.

In the verses immediately preceding Paul’s ‘work out your own salvation,’ the apostle tells of Jesus ‘emptying himself and taking the form of a slave.’ Why did Jesus give up so much and suffer so much? He did that you and I might be saved. He took the death our sin brings on himself. He put in the ultimate effort, and he expects us to give everything to be his followers.

Energy Stewardship

We will soon be replacing most of the fluorescent lighting in the church building with much more efficient LED lamps. Hillside has contracted with Duke Energy and Lime Energy to replace existing fluorescent tubes in overhead light fixtures in the classrooms, office, and corridors, including the lower level (the worship center is not included). In addition to replacing the fluorescent lamps, the fluorescent ballasts will be removed.

This project grew out of an Energy Savings Analysis performed through North Carolina Interfaith Power and Light. Duke Energy is providing 70% of the funds for this work. This change in the lighting will substantially save energy, utility cost, maintenance, and pollution. We will also be replacing the lighting at the Hillside sign with LED lights as well as two exterior light fixtures that illuminate the lower parking lot at night. We look forward to more energy conservation projects at the church.

Troop 45 Christmas Tree Sale

Support our Boy Scout Troop by buying a beautiful Fraser Fir Christmas Tree, Wreath or White Pine Roping. Several tree sizes are available. Prices for trees range from $58 for 6-7ft to $125 for 10-11ft. Small wreaths are $20, large wreaths are $30 and White Pine Roping is $35. Contact James Asbill or Boy Scout Henry Tennant to order.

The trees are grown on family run Long’s Tree Farm in West Jefferson, NC and cut just days before you get them. Sales are preorder only and payment is due when the order is placed. Orders are due by Thursday, Nov 12.

Pickup is on Tuesday, Nov 24, 6:00-8:00pm at Hillside Church.

Food Pantry

This month, our Food Pantry will be open Saturdays, November 7th & 21st - at our usual time from 11am to 12pm.

CONSIDER:

Volunteering one or more Saturdays a month for the food distributions. Bagging begins at 9am and distribution prep begins at 10:30am. Sign up HERE and scroll down to select Chapel Hill Pantry events.
Donating groceries - we are collecting dry and canned goods, food items, fresh produce, bread and meat (see most needed items here. Drop off at the collection box outside the church entryway
WE NEED PAPER BAGS—new or used in good condition. Leave in the collection box.

Appalachian Christmas Outreach

Thank you for contributing to our Christmas backpack project in partnership with Baptists on Mission. We were able to prepare 32 backpacks filled with needed items for Appalachian children in areas of need. Pray for the children who will receive these backpack blessings, that our gifts will provide for some of their needs and that they will feel God’s love and His presence as they learn about Jesus' birth.

Church Business Updates

Elder Election Results: Thank you to Roger Sit and Starlyn Combs who have rotated off the Elder Board. Our newly elected Elders are: Bob Eatman, Ann Delaney and Phil Partin. They have already begun their 3 year terms.
Church Constitution Revisions: Unanimously approved as of Oct 30th. Our church began operating under the revised constitution immediately.
Fall Workday: 9 Hillside folks and about 25 Troop 45 Scouts assisted in multiple landscaping tasks, trash pick-up and general outdoor clean-up.
