Parishioner of the Month - Birch DeVault
Birch DeVault and his wife, Jan, were transferred to Arden, NC where Birch was an engineer with Westinghouse from their hometown of Pittsburgh in 1981. In 1995 they moved to Milwaukee, WI where Birch worked for Eaton Corporation until his retirement in 2008. “Then it was time to come back home to North Carolina,” Birch says with that ever-present twinkle in his eye.
Birch and Jan immediately joined Immaculate Conception Parish and have been involved in the life of the parish ever since. As a past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, Birch now serves as the recorder and Knights’ newsletter editor. He can be found setting up tables for the St. Patrick’s dinners, collecting food for the food drives, serving at the pancake breakfasts, and even passing out tootsie rolls at the Apple Festival!
“It’s always fun to see how excited the kids are when we give them a tootsie roll,” he explains. “The older people usually comment on how long it’s been since they’ve had a tootsie roll,” he laughs.
In his 13 years at the parish, Birch has served on numerous committees and boards. He is currently an usher, a Eucharistic Minister, a member of the Facilities Committee, and with his wife, a regular volunteer at the Attic here at the parish. Birch finds it “so rewarding to be able to help the needy in our community with furniture or dishes or lamps, whatever they need to make a home here.” He also serves on the landscape Committee in his neighborhood.
For fun and relaxation, Birch enjoys reading, gardening, feeding and watching the birds in their yard, entertaining their two cats, and photography. Besides taking pictures for the Knights’ newsletter, Birch is also a photographer for the parish newsletter. “A favorite thing to do,” Birch says, “is to hike Glassy Mountain. Another favorite thing,” he adds, “is a trip to the Flat Rock Bakery for one of their goodies!”
Birch appreciates the support our parishioners have for the priests and pastors that we have had over the years. “I really enjoy the feeling of community in our parish church and school, and everyone’s willingness to help,” he says gratefully.
Our Rosary group invites all those who attend the 12:10 daily Mass to join them in unity to pray the Rosary after Mass. We are going to ask Our Lady of Good Health to end the COVID virus thus ending this pandemic! A large united body of prayer people pleading to the Virgin Mary for the end of the pandemic is exceedingly powerful. In history, Mary has stopped wars, and we are in a war of viruses today! Please consider joining us. The time for the Mass and the Rosary is less than one hour. October is the month of the Holy Rosary. What better way than to come together as a group to ask the Virgin Mary for help.
Our Lady of Good Health
Devotion to Our Lady of Good Health of Vailankanni, India, can be traced back to the mid 16th century and is attributed to three separate miracles at the sites surrounding the Basilica.
Although all three apparitions resulted in the erection of a shrine to our Lady, it was the promise of the Portuguese sailors that caused a permanent edifice to be built at Velankanni.
The Church was built in the Gothic style, modified by the Portuguese, and then further expanded later on due to the influx of pilgrims. The Church building was raised to the status of Basilica in 1962 by Pope John XXIII.
The Shrine of Our Lady of Velankanni, also known as the 'Lourdes of the East', is one of the most frequented religious sites in India.
Explore The Beauty Of Church Teaching
Be a part of the Tuesday evening class of adults who share what we believe, how we live, what we celebrate and how we pray. As we resume face-to-face meetings this fall, we continue discussing Catholic beliefs as outlined in the Apostles Creed, utilizing the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
We meet in Meeting Room 2 (the room closest to the St. Francis Room) every Tuesday at 7:00 pm for an hour and a half. Regular participants receive questions in advance to facilitate home study and lively discussion. It’s a great opportunity for adult singles and couples to share faith together. Come and take a look. Don’t feel like this is something you have to do every Tuesday, but you might decide you like it. There is no fixed entry or exit point – it’s ongoing.

Gene Ray Magruder – Grand Knight of Council 7184
In June 2021, Gene Ray Magruder was elected as Grand Knight of Immaculate Conception Council 7184. Gene Ray was part of the leadership team that made changes that made Council 7184 a success in spite of the pandemic. After the initial recovery the Knights have had two Welcome Back Pancake Breakfasts in celebration. As we are seeing a resurgence the Knights are again reevaluating strategy related to indoor events. Knights plan to continue spiritual and charitable efforts.
In October, the whole parish will experience a weekend of Reflection and Recruitment sponsored by the Knights. Gene Ray’s goal is to break down all barriers that are preventing men to become members of the Knights of Columbus
A Cup of Encouragement
The Secret of Happiness
One good thing about this pandemic is that it has given us time to stop, think, reflect and pray. While praying, a challenging thought occurred to me. What makes me happy?
After reflection, I came to this conclusion - it is serving others in the way in which our Lord asks me to. Admittedly, I did not come to that conclusion on my own. I experienced it by participating in the Catholic Vision for Leading Like Jesus, S-3 Leadership, Servant, Steward, Shepherd, by Dr. Owen Phelps, Ph.D. In his book and encounters he points out a Christ centered principal, highlighting Jesus’ perfect will for all of us.
In the Gospel of Jn. 13:13- 17, (The Jerusalem Bible) at the Last Supper, Jesus does something humble then says something remarkable. He washes the feet of the disciples, and makes the following statement: “You call me Master and Lord and rightly; so, I am. If I then the Lord and Master have washed your feet, you should wash each other’s feet. I have given you an example so that you may copy what I have done for you. I tell you most solemnly, no servant is greater than his master, no messenger is greater than the man who sent him. Now that you know this happiness will be yours if you behave accordingly.”
The Secret to Happiness is out!
There are several ways to “wash feet” serving others. It may be as simple as letting the person at the four way stop sign or grocery store go ahead of you or being available when your neighbor needs an errand... Whatever it is, not only will it make you happy, but it will also make the recipient happy and it will make Jesus very happy!
Imitating Jesus, being Christ like to family, friends, neighbors and strangers makes the difference.
How will you wash the feet of others?

The Knights of Columbus Food Drive benefiting Interfaith Assistance Ministry (IAM) was a great success. Our parishioners donated $2,020.00 in cash and checks plus 515 pounds of food.
In addition, the Knights will receive a $400.00 check from Supreme K of C for further distribution addressing hunger needs in our area.
The next Food Drive will take place in December.
