In recent months, I've developed a renewed interest in the pastoral act of blessing. The disconnections wrought by pandemics have turned the glimpses of glory that we reflect in and to one another - often through the miracle of Zoom - into a lifeline. I have been emboldened in offering blessings to those I encounter; and my ears have become more finely tuned to hearing them in the most unlikely of places.

The good work of ACPE is accomplished by dedicated volunteers who give their time, energy, passion, and talent to the important work of the organization. The international healing and transformational work of ACPE reaches far and wide. With the new governance structure, the association has been able to broaden its reach of spiritual care and education.
The Leadership Development Committee (LDC) is committed to continuing to build a strong, diverse leadership structure in the organization. The LDC works with commission and committee chairs to match the gifts of ACPE members with organizational needs. As you know, ACPE's leadership structure supports advocacy work, strengthens our organizational connections here and around the world, attends to the professional development and well-being of its members, ensures our work is ethically and financially responsible, and oversees robust certification and accreditation processes. The goal of the project is to strengthen chaplaincy degree programs at schools across the country. Beginning with the redesign of courses within theological schools, we can start to think on a pedagogical level about transforming the ways in which chaplains are trained and spiritual care is provided.
If you are a theological educator teaching a course on chaplaincy and/or spiritual care, you are invited to join the project!
- The deadline to apply is September 1, 2020.
- Participating educators will receive a stipend to support their work.

The Luce COVID-19 Microgrants are an opportunity for ACPE programs that meet the criteria to apply for funds to support responses to the Covid pandemic.

As ACPE is in the process of transitioning to a new database, quarterly billing for accreditation fees for the period 4/1/2020 to 6/30/2020 will be delayed by one month. We expect to send the invoices out by August 15, 2020. This will not change any other quarterly billing.

Thanks to all of you who have made our Virtual Educator Gatherings and our Virtual Psychotherapist Gatherings a vital place to connect, debrief, and share ideas during these uncertain times. We will continue to offer one meeting time each week for both Educators and Psychotherapists. Please drop in as you are able; no registration is required. We hope last week was more than just a digital substitute for our May conference. We hope it provided you with an opportunity to remember, to connect, to delight, and to feel appreciated. As we've noted elsewhere, it was a little like our association's homecoming celebration, where we rejoiced with the newly certified and mourned those departed in the last year, where we thanked those whose contributions support our work, and where we paused to listen to speakers who call us to our best work. Born in 1895, Marion Strobel was an editor and poet in Chicago. This poem offers a reflection on a proud house, perhaps in ways that are reminiscent of ACPE:
Proud House

Krishna Janmashtami (Hinduism)
This day celebrates the birthday of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar, or incarnation, of Vishnu. Upon his birth, his life was threatened by his uncle, King Kansa, who believed that Krishna was fated to kill him. Kansa ordered that Krishna be brought to him, but the baby was miraculously carried away to a safe hiding place. Hindus celebrate this day with a large feast. Sweets are given to children, and a clay statue of Krishna is worshipped.

Ulambana / Obon / Ghost Festival (Buddhism)
The Ghost Festival is the height of the Ghost Month (August 3rd - August 31st), the seventh month in the traditional Chinese calendar. During this time, the spirits are allowed to return and roam the earth. The first day of the Ghost Month is celebrated with offerings to ancestors and to ghosts without families, so they will not bring you harm. These offerings include food and ghost money: money burned so that the spirits can use it. Ullambana is the day when the spirits are said to be most active. Feasts and ceremonies are often performed to help ease their suffering.
Feast of the Assumption of Blessed Mary / Dormition of the Theotokos (Catholic Christianity)
According to Roman Catholic doctrine and the traditions of the Catholic Church, the Blessed Virgin Mary (Mary, the mother of Jesus) "having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory." This means that Mary was transported into Heaven with her body and soul united. The feast day recognizing Mary's passage into Heaven is celebrated as The Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary by Roman Catholics.

Paryushana (Jainism)
Paryushana is a word that means "to stay in one place." Originally, this was a monastic practice, drawing from the tradition of monks staying in one place during the rainy season. Now, all use this time to slow down, fast, reflect and repent.
