From Patricia K Mathis,
Manager National FAA Safety Team

Proficient pilots are safer pilots. That’s why we always encourage pilots to participate in the FAASTeam WINGS Pilot Proficiency Program (WINGS). We are excited that WIN has developed E-Z WINGS online to make earning your WINGS easier. Pilots can request credit for WINGS Activities they have completed with just a few clicks.
|
|
Flight Instructors can just as easily validate those credits or give WINGS credit for training they have completed with that pilot. Later this year, E-Z WINGS will become available in the Apple App Store and Android App Store. This will make it even faster to use E-Z WINGS by making it more efficient to login with your FAASafety.gov credentials. The WIN directors' work, effort, and expertise have made this possible through outstanding collaboration with FAASTeam leadership. For that, we thank them.

Manager, National FAASTeam

By the Numbers
"E-Z WINGS"
|
Following the launch of the WINGS Industry Network E-Z WINGS web tool, the number of aviators who've accessed it is impressive. To date, the tool has received 65,000 hits and counting. Given the AirVenture launch just over five months ago, we believe this much access to be outstanding!
In the meantime, E-Z WINGS continues development, closely collaborating with FAASTeam internal operations leadership
Following is an update on WINGS Credit Requests - calendar year 2022:
- Standard Flight Activities: 23,910
- From SPANS Seminars: 154,804
- From ALC Courses: 186,330
WINGS Courses (ALC) are the leading solution for aviators to earn Knowledge Credits toward their next Phase of WINGS!
We look forward to working with your organization to demonstrate your unique dedication and focus on Aviation Safety!

Pilot Certificates are Not Performance Trophies
by Jason Blair, Grand Rapids FSDO FAASTeam Lead Representative, 2023 Michigan FAASTeam Representative of the year
|
Every generation seems to think the next generation doesn’t work as hard, isn’t as talented, or doesn’t have the same motivation that their generation did when they were younger. I don’t think that has been any different in aviation training historically.
There are certainly things that younger pilots know and do better than generations before. There are probably skills and knowledge that older generations of pilots had or developed that new generations don’t, or don’t even need. But one thing that I can say is that from a metrics standpoint, it certainly seems that we are headed the wrong way in pilot skill and knowledge right now.
|
A statistic was recently shared with us [DPEs) that indicates that in the past approximately 6-months, it appears first-time pass rates on private pilot airplane single-engine land practical tests are hovering somewhere in the 50-60% range.

A safe pilot is a humble pilot—lessons from the Cirrus community, by John Zimmerman, president, Sporty's Pilot Shop
After a recent weekend immersed in the world of Cirrus airplanes, I have a renewed appreciation for the French maxim plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose. No matter how you slice the data, and no matter what airplane you fly, the most important driver of aviation safety continues to be the person in the left seat. Even with all the latest technology—in fact, maybe especially with all the latest technology—there’s no substitute for a humble pilot. Read more
A Beginner’s Guide to the FAA WINGS Program, Redbird Flight Simulations
Redbird is a long-time supporter of the WINGS Industry Network. They hosted WIN's first Insights broadcast, offered complimentary sim sessions to FAASTeam Representatives, and, more recently, Redbird President, Charlie Gregoire, joined the WIN Committee. Charlie believes the WINGS program is a key means to provide proficiency training. In fact, Redbird has integrated WINGS-qualified programs in many of their sim curricula, including for the popular Pilot Proficiency Center held during the annual AirVenture airshow.
WIN appreciates Redbird's commitment to the WINGS program, and thanks them for producing the article offering an overview of the WINGS program for beginners. To access this article, click here.
