Quentin Wright, Ed.D.
President, Lone Star College-Houston North
Greetings, Community Partners ––

I hope all of you are safe and doing well.

Believe it or not, we are ending our first official year of LSC-Houston North. While everything has not been perfect, we have had several successes. Your contributions and support has been more than we could have ever imagined and we are grateful.

As a year in review, I wanted to note a few of the accomplishments.
While COVID-19 will bring about unique challenges, I am confident that we will continue to improve the lives of students and strengthen our community partnerships. We aim to be a college of the community. Therefore, we are grateful to each of you for your ongoing support.

THANK YOU TO OUR COMMUNITY
Student Assistance
With your help, we were able to help many students with their outside-of-class needs.
A few highlights are below:

  • We provided over $320,000 in scholarships and general assistance (food, emergency funding, technology assistance.) to students. This does not include general financial aid.

  • Our CARE Centers, at the time of closure in February, had received over 2,100 visits.

  • Since the COVID-19 closure, we have added several services including Internet assistance, laptops, and Instacart food delivery for students.
Community Partnerships
We are very grateful for the partnerships with the local government agencies and the community organizations. A few highlights include:

  • A partnership with Houston Public Library for a Summer Reading Initiative

  • A partnership with several churches to have a Summer STEM Camp through our Discovery College program

  • A partnership with the God’s Grace Community Church to host a mask drive

  • A partnership with the City of Houston to hold Health Scholars program that allowed stop-outs to become Certified Nursing Assistants
COURSE COMPLETION AND SUCCESS
Course Completion and Success
Our three locations (LSC-HN Fairbanks, LSC-HN Greenspoint, and LSC-HN Victory) all had very good years in terms of completion and success. Not only did the students lead the system for the 2019-2020 academic year, the gains were notable.
  • Overall successful completion (A,B, or C in course) increased by 7 percentage points.
  • Hispanic student successful completion increased by 5 percentage points.
  • Black student successful completion increased by 12 percentage points.
  • First-time-in-college (FTIC) successful completion increased by 7 percentage points.
In addition, students enrolled in more classes and persisted from the fall to spring semester at a higher rate. We were also appreciative to be able to participate in several parades and events such as the National Night Outs by the Near Northwest and North Houston Management Districts and Operation Backpack by the Aldine-Greenspoint YMCA.
NEW PROGRAMS
We were also able to expand our program offerings at the locations. In addition to growing the Welding and HVAC offerings, we also added Human Services, Criminal Justice, Business, and the Associates of Science degrees.

While we are proud of our first year, we are even more excited about the upcoming year. We have several initiatives that we are looking forward to as noted below.
  • Registration for spring classes at LSC-Houston North Fallbrook will begin in November.

  • We are in the process of expanding our Business offerings and adding Accounting, Esports, Mobile App Design, Mechanical Design, Associate of Arts in Teaching, and Logistics Management, and Pipe-fitting during this next academic year.

  • Our new Chemistry lab at LSC-HN Fairbanks is scheduled for completion in December.

  • Our Greenspoint renovations are scheduled for completion in the Spring 2021. This will include expanded meeting space, more offices, and front entrance redesign.
GCCSA Partnership
We are excited to partner with The Gulf Coast Community Services Association. The GCCSA has agreed to provide aid to eligible Lone Star College-Houston North students that have been negatively impacted by COVID-19.

Students that live in Harris County and have median household incomes within 200% of the federal poverty line will be eligible to receive Walmart gift cards. More details to come!

LSC-Houston North will be hosting a backpack drive at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 29 at our LSC-Houston North Greenspoint location.

Approximately 200 clear backpacks with supplies inside will be provided to families using a drive-through format.

LSC-Houston North Fairbanks Renovations
LSC-Houston North Fairbanks will have several new additions this fall. A new monument sign is now at the corner of HWY 290 and W Little York Rd.

In addition, the first floor restrooms have been renovated and a family restroom has been added.

The CARE Center is currently being expanded to provide students with increased access to food and toiletries and more office space has been added to accommodate new faculty positions.
8-Week 2 Classes Start October 21
With the delayed starts for some school districts and the COVID-19 related trends, we understand that there may be some individuals that want to delay their enrollment in later in the semester.

Fortunately, LSC-Houston North’s 8-week model will allow for students that do not enroll in August to still have classes this fall. The second 8-week term will start on October 2 and end December 13.

With the right structure and adequate support, our students are capable of succeeding academically and professionally.

For this reason, we have Community Assistance Resource for Everyone (C.A.R.E.) Centers that are located at all LSC-Houston North locations.

The CARE Center is open to any currently enrolled LSC-Houston North student and provides CARE bags and CARE packages that include food, toiletries, and other essentials.
Did You Know?
At LSC-Houston North we put students first. Each first time in college student receives a faculty mentor to help guide them through their first year of college. Research indicates that effective mentoring is one of the most powerful relationships for influencing human behavior.

Sometimes, all a student need is someone to lend a caring ear. Just being able to speak to someone and share troubles, feelings, emotions and fears has a way of making these issues seem smaller. Our mentors are in place to provide guidance for our students and steer them in the right direction.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed our world in many ways. People with disabilities, people with chronic health conditions and people over the age 60, are at a higher risk of becoming infected and seriously ill. Safety measures such as social distancing, stay at home orders, and the wearing of face masks or cloth face coverings are now part of our daily lives.

Wearing a face mask may be difficult for some people with a disability. State and local government agencies or private businesses that want customers to use a face mask may have questions and concerns. Below is a fact sheet that offers answers to questions about the issue of face mask policies, reasons why a person with a disability might not be able to wear a face mask, and the legal rights a person has under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
Why is it important to participate in the 2020 Census?
Federal and State dollars are provided based on Census counts that fund: Hospitals, Public Safety, Roads, Health Insurance, Schools and much more!

This is so important for our LSC-Houston North community, so make sure to participate and spread the word!
Interested in Dual Credit?

Do you or someone you know have a child in high school or being home-schooled? Dual Credit allows students to earn high school and college credit at the same time.

Dual credit classes transfer to four-year universities, shortening the time it takes to earn a college degree.

College tuition is waived for dual credit courses, so students and families save money. Dual credit students do NOT pay tuition, only course fees.
