Greetings from Maritere Crum Alumnae Relations Coordinator

Happy Easter, Oakies!

Our second annual Alumnae Week was full of fun, laughter, reconnecting and friendly competition! Thank you to all of the alumnae and alumnae parents that took part in making our week a great success.

We kicked-off the week with our Day of Service on Saturday morning. Thanks to all of your generosity, we were able to fill 10 layette bags for new moms at A Woman's Choice. We are especially grateful to Mrs. Juliana Dort (Sophia '18) for not only guiding us in our preparation, but assisting us throughout the morning.

Sunday's Catching up with the Faculty had us reconnecting and reminiscing with former faculty members, Elizabeth Black and Kate Makuc, as well as current faculty member, Jennifer Kilmer. Thank you to Katie (McNeish '16) Hill for moderating!

The Class Captain Meet and Greet on Monday night allowed us the opportunity to get to know our fellow Class Captains, and thanks to our alumna bartender, Laura Cermak '15, we learned how to make our signature Oakie cocktails and acquired some new cocktail making tips/tricks along the way. Congratulations to Alydia Ullman '20 for winning the raffle. She is the new recipient of the alumnae hat.

Our Spring Day of Giving helped us raise $1,759.91 towards tuition assistance, and a generous alum parent has offered to donate an additional $2500 if we meet the challenge of 25 NEW alumnae donors this year. We just need 12 more new donors. If you haven't already made a donation this year, please consider making your donation now to help us lock in the extra $2500 for the next generation. The Class of 1999 is currently in the lead with the highest amount of total giving this year. We have until June 30, 2022. The winning class will be honored in a special way during Homecoming Weekend.

On Wednesday night, we welcomed back alumnae parents who currently have daughters in college, for a wine and cheese social to make care packages for their girls. Lots of goodies were packed into those boxes!

Thursday night's Alumnae Trivia Night brought on the friendly competition. Thank you to Kathleen Ouyang '09 for hosting, and congratulations to Sophia Dort '18, Elena Buono '21 and Sophie (Buono '14) Martinson for being part of the winning team! Each of them received a $25 Amazon gift card - way to go Oakies!

We closed out the week with a Meditation and Stations of the Cross led by Fr. Marty in the school chapel.

It was an amazing week and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing so many of you! I can't wait for next year's Alumnae Week!

As always, please continue to stay in-touch and come by for a visit. We love to see you!

Sincerely,

Maritere

Oakies in Action

Congratulations, Coach Heeter!

Congratulations to Middle School Athletic Director Caroline Heeter '97 for her appointment to the Virginia Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (VIAAA) Board of Directors and Middle School Vice Chair! VIAAA promotes high standards of achievement and ethics in interscholastic athletics among Virginia schools.

Alumna, Laura Cermak '15,

is betrothed

Laura Cermak ('15) and her fiancé Danny Kumar celebrated their betrothal service in London on the Feast of St. Joseph, March 19. Fr. Lawrence Lew, OP presided at the Rosary Shrine, using the traditional prayers and blessing of the engagement ring. The couple joined friends and family afterwards for a reception. Laura and Danny will be married June 11, 2022 at St. John the Beloved in McLean, VA.

Annual Gala and Auction

Thank you to all of our alumnae and alumnae parents that participated in this year's Gala.

We raised over $270,000!

Alumnae Parent Corner

Distinguished Alumnae Parent Award

In 2018, the first Distinguished Alumnae Parent Award was given to Maricel and Charles Heeter (Celina ’95, Caroline ’97, and Catherine ’99) for their many years of service and generosity in support of Oakcrest School. The award was subsequently named in their honor and is given to alumnae parents who live up to their example of servant leadership in support of Oakcrest School.

At this year’s Gala and Auction held at Westwood Country Club in Vienna, Virginia, Oakcrest honored Dr. Bradley and Lisa Smith (Ana Victoria ’19) and Jack and Suzanne McCreery (Eileen ’19), for their many years of service and leadership of the Gala and Auction. Without their hard work and creativity we would not have been able to host two very successful virtual alas in 2020 and 2021 and they continue to be partners in generosity on behalf of Oakcrest. Congratulations Smiths and McCreerys!

Alessandra Christiani '11

When asked how Oakcrest formed her, Alessandra Christiani ‘11 says that above all else, Oakcrest taught her how to think critically and deeply. She calls this “the most useful skill in my life, both in

work and in my personal life.” It is a skill that she has certainly put to use in her  position as Director

of Corporate and Business Development at The Knot Worldwide, a company geared towards helping couples plan weddings and creating homes and families together.

Oakcrest Then and Now

Choir!

Oakcrest School's official music program was started by Mrs. Anne Miller in 2002. She began in her first

year by establishing an Upper School choir class. The following year, Middle School choirs were

added. Today, Oakcrest has a Concert Chorus, a Liturgical Choir (which sings at Mass every Friday,

as well as at special occasions such as Baccalaureate Mass), and sixth, seventh, and eighth grade choirs. Our Concert Chorus has been able to participate in many amazing performance opportunities over the years. Students have sung with the McLean Orchestra, at the National Catholic Prayer Breakfast in Washington, DC, and in various churches throughout Italy. During its most recent pilgrimage to Italy, the Chorus sang with the Sistine Chapel Choir in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome for the Feast of Mary, the Mother of God. Its most recent special project was collaborating with The Smithsonian Center for Folk Life & Cultural Heritage on a video to promote America’s rich cultural heritage of folk music among young people.
