An academic bilingual community fostering global citizenship
From the Principal
September 23, 2021

Dear Park Spanish Immersion Elementary School Community:

I hope that you're having a great week! As a reminder, we will host our virtual "Welcome Night" from 6:00-7:45 pm so that families may learn more about their children's experience this year. We hope that you can join us. Please see below for more information.

We are continuing to work on routines, and it's been heartwarming to see friendships begin and continue to blossom. Our students are capable and amazing, and I'm so grateful to work with each of them. I will host the first virtual "Coffee with Corey" next Thursday, September 30 from 3:45-4:15 at this link. These virtual opportunities allow community members to ask questions, and they allow us to learn together about how to make our school even better for all of our learners.

Have a great week, and I look forward to seeing you soon!

Corey

National Archives Virtual Pajama Party Registration
Are you interested in the National Archives Virtual Pajama Party? Click HERE to register your child/children for the live program on Saturday September 25 featuring civil-rights activist and title character Sylvia Mendez, and acclaimed author Winifred Conkling. Pre-recorded educational activities will be shared in advance. This series is geared for children age 8-12, but younger or older siblings are welcome if they are interested.

The book we will be reading for this program is "Sylvia and Aki." Educational activities will connect themes in the book - fairness, friendship, civil rights, and persisting through adversity - to real historical documents at the National Archives related to the Mendez v. Westminster court case and Japanese internment. Children will be invited to create and share their art and writing activities.

Once you complete the registration form you will receive a confirmation e-mail and additional information about the program. The link for the live program on Saturday September 25 will be sent the day before the event. For more information please email education@nara.gov with the subject line "Pajama Party."

Support Grieving Students During Transition Challenges
Many students are grieving what has been lost during COVID-19 closures—chances to socialize with peers, be a senior in middle school, start kindergarten, or participate in sports or performing arts. Parents can use these tips to help their children overcome school transition-related challenges this school year.

Times of transition and change can be particularly challenging for grieving students. Many students are grieving what has been lost during COVID-19 closures. Most have been affected by ongoing issues in
the broader world as well—social justice, racial inequities, bitter political divides, the financial impact of the pandemic. Students who are grieving the death of a family member or loved one are part of this mix.

Birthday Treats
Since 2012-13 as part of our Strategic Plan, one of the focus areas has been to promote a parent/teacher collaboration in providing healthy snack options in the classroom. As a result, a Birthday Treat school procedure was adopted and implemented whereby PSI no longer celebrates students' birthdays through treats, shared snacks or individual non-food items (i.e. pencils, stickers, etc.).

2021-22 COVID Quarantine Info for Students, Family & Staff
As communicated in the recent Communicator to families...

St. Louis Park Public Schools will continue to follow CDC and MDH recommendations regarding quarantine for students who test positive for COVID and those who are close contacts.

Positive COVID Cases:
  • Stay home for 10 days from symptom onset, OR 10 days from positive test, if no symptoms.
  • People who test positive for COVID should stay at home until all three of these things are true:
  • It has been 10 days since they first felt sick or tested positive;
  • They are feeling better; and
  • They have had no fever for at least 24 hours, without using medicine that lowers fever.

COVID Exposure at School:
  • When a student or staff member is a close contact in school (exposed to COVID at school), they need to stay home and quarantine for either 10 days with no COVID testing or 7 days if a negative PCR test was done on day 5 or after.
  • Exception: In the K–12 indoor classroom setting, the close contact definition excludes students who were within 3 to 6 feet of an infected student (laboratory-confirmed) if both the infected student and the exposed student(s) correctly and consistently wore well-fitting masks the entire time. This exception does not apply to teachers, staff, or other adults in the indoor classroom setting.

Communications from School for Positive COVID Cases & Close Contacts:
  • Schools and Programs will communicate with parents/guardians and families as follows:
  • Parents/guardians of students who have been identified as positive COVID cases will receive a phone call from the school health office.
  • Close contacts to the positive case will receive a phone call alerting them to the positive case and giving them quarantine instructions as well as a COVID-19 Fact Sheet from Hennepin County Public Health.
  • Parents/guardians of students in the classroom will receive an email alerting them to a positive case in the classroom.
  • Teachers and Staff will receive email notification of all positive cases in the school.

COVID Exposure at Home:
  • Quarantine 14 days from last contact with the positive household member.
  • When separating is not possible, the 14 day quarantine starts when the COVID positive individual finishes their isolation.
  • A shortened quarantine is not an option for COVID positive household members.

Who does not need to quarantine?
  • If someone is vaccinated and is exposed, they do not need to quarantine if the following are true:
  • The COVID exposure was at least 14 days after their vaccination series was fully completed. They do not currently have any symptoms of COVID.
  • If someone has recovered from COVID in the past 90 days and is exposed again, they do not need to quarantine if ALL of the following are true:
  • Their illness was laboratory confirmed in the past 90 days.
  • They have fully recovered.
  • They do not currently have any symptoms of COVID.

COVID Exclusion Guidelines:

"More Common Symptoms" consistent with COVID: Fever greater than or equal to 100.4 F; New onset and/or worsening cough; Difficulty breathing; and New loss of taste or smell

"Less Common Symptoms" consistent with COVID:  Sore throat; Nausea; Vomiting; Diarrhea; Chills; Muscle pain; Excessive fatigue; New onset of severe headache; New onset of nasal congestion or runny nose

Students with one “more common symptoms” or two “less common symptoms” will need to stay home and isolate for either 10 days from symptom onset, or they may return sooner if they test negative for COVID or receive an alternate diagnosis from their health care provider.

Siblings/household members who are not fully vaccinated, or who have not had lab confirmed COVID in the last 90 days, should stay home as well unless the ill household member tests negative for COVID or receives an alternate diagnosis.

Student Work During Quarantine

It is possible that your student might have to quarantine at home due to a COVID exposure at some point during the 2021-22 school year. Teachers and staff at each of our buildings are committed to ensuring that students continue to learn while at home during those times of quarantine.

Order from Parkway Pizza to raise funds for PSI
Parkway Pizza Dine-Out for Schools is an on-going fundraiser, graciously hosted monthly by Parkway Pizza in SLP.

On the FIRST WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH, 5% of sales on that day will go to PSI whether you dine in, carry out, or opt for delivery! The next PSI date falls on October 6th. Last school year, PSI earned over $1,200. THANK YOU PARKWAY PIZZA!
Box Tops due for Fall deadline, Nov.1st
Thank you to everyone who has been clipping and/or scanning Box Tops for Education! For every Box Top submitted, PSI received $.10 and those submissions can really add up!

Even though Box Tops has gone digital, there are still some products out there that have unexpired traditional clips. PSI can still get credit for those as long as they are not expired. Send hardcopy Box Tops to school. There’s a container for them in the PSI office.

If you are unable to send hardcopy Box Tops to school, follow the step-by-step instructions on the BTFE.COM. website to safely submit your clips so they count toward PSI.

If you haven’t already, download the Box Tops app to scan your receipts & earn money for PSI! See products & learn more at BTFE.COM.

Thank you for your continued support!

Rental Assistance and Resources
In 2017 the City of St. Louis Park created a shallow rent subsidy program to assist low income renter households who live in St. Louis Park and have children attending school in St. Louis Park. Nine families were admitted to the program and assisted beginning December 2017. In 2018 the number of families assisted was increased to 14. We have since increased the size of the program to a total of 20 families.

The St. Louis Park Housing Authority will be taking applications for the Kids in the Park program through October 22, 2021. All applications received by October 22nd will be placed on the waiting list. Placement order will be determined by a random sorting of all applications received.
