City Hall Returns to In-Person Service
|
|
Due to a holiday surge in coronavirus cases, the Beaumont City Hall reverted to a virtual format in December. While the temporary closure prohibited in-person services, full municipal services have been maintained throughout the pandemic. In response to a countywide reduction in infections, Beaumont City Hall reopened to the public on Monday, March 1, 2021.
Customer Service is available in-person Monday – Friday from 8 am to 12 pm for limited services and we continue to provide quality customer service online and over the phone during regular business hours. Residents are encouraged to continue conducting business virtually as much as possible, in an effort to minimize unnecessary contact.
SAFETY FIRST
For those who need to perform in-person services, the following guidelines are in place:
- Masks or face coverings are required.
- Visitors will be temperature screened upon entering the facility.
- Limit one individual per household or business, if possible.
- Adhere to the social distancing guidelines.
- Stay home if you are sick or if anyone in your household is experiencing symptoms.
To keep guests and employees healthy and safe, the City will:
- Provide spatial markers on the floor to assist with social distancing.
- Install Plexiglass at service counters.
- Increased sanitation of the entire facility.
- Ensure all on-site employees wear face coverings, continue increased handwashing, social distance, and stay home if sick or symptomatic.

PUBLIC SAFETY | CHIEF'S CORNER
|
|
The impacts of COVID-19 have gone beyond medical and health-related concerns. COVID-19 has also impacted those who suffer from mental health conditions and substance abuse. With stay-at-home orders and closures of businesses and schools, many people have been isolated, struggling with stress and financial worries, causing some to turn to alcohol or narcotics to cope. The long-lasting and far-reaching effects of the pandemic are still yet to be seen.
Recent studies have concluded that alcohol sales for brick-and-mortar stores are up 21% and online alcohol sales have seen a 234% increase during the pandemic. Over 10,000 people nationwide are killed annually by drunk driving crashes. Almost 30 people in the US die every day in drunk driving incidents. Locally the Beaumont Police Department has seen a slight uptick in driving under the influence (DUI) arrests/traffic collisions.
Driving a vehicle while impaired is a crime. Tough enforcement of drunk-driving laws has been a major factor in reducing drunk-driving deaths. Charges for driving under the influence can range from a misdemeanor to a felony and can cost a first-time offender over $10,000 in fines and legal fees. The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) estimates the total cost for a DUI conviction in California to be in excess of $45,000.
In an effort to combat drunk and/or impaired driving, the Beaumont Police Department will be holding a DUI and Driver’s License Checkpoint on March 26, 2021, from 6 pm -12 am at an undisclosed location within the city of Beaumont.
Checkpoint locations are chosen based on a history of DUI crashes and arrests. The primary purpose of checkpoints is not to make arrests, but to promote public safety by deterring drivers from driving impaired. During the checkpoint, officers will look for signs that drivers are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, as well as check for valid driver’s licenses.
The Beaumont Police Department is committed to keeping the public safe. We would like to remind the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some prescription medications or over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving. Always follow directions for use and read warning labels about driving or operating heavy machinery, which includes driving a car. While medicinal and recreational marijuana is legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal. If you plan on drinking or taking medications that may impact your ability to drive safely, plan on staying at home.

I-10 Tune Up | New Crossover Lane
|
|
|
During the week of Mark 7, motorists will notice a new crossover lane on westbound I-10 from Main Street in Cabazon to 8th Street in Banning. Crossover lanes allow crews to complete concrete rehabilitation without reducing freeway capacity by shifting one lane of traffic to the other side of the freeway using a temporary K-Rail lane that crosses the center median.
Reminder: The I-10 Tune Up construction zone speed limit is 60 MPH

Testing Remains Priority in Riverside County
|
|
Active coronavirus cases have been declining in Riverside County for weeks. Riverside County currently meets one of the state’s metrics to move into the red tier, however, both the red tier’s metrics for adjusted case rate and positivity rate must be met to move forward.
Riverside County’s case rate is worsened by the upwards adjustment for not reaching the statewide median of PCR swab tests, which is 386.4 per 100,000 population. Riverside County’s test rate, which was well above 800 per 100,000 population late last year, is now at 361.4 per 100,000 residents.
Based on the state’s criteria, if Riverside County tests at a higher rate than the statewide median, the adjusted case rate will be reduced instead of increased.

Youth Sports in Riverside County
|
|
Moderate- and high-contact sports, including soccer, football, baseball, cheer and water polo, may now resume in Riverside County as the county’s adjusted case rate is 11.3.
The state issued new sports guidance recently allowing certain moderate- and high-contact sports to begin in counties with an adjusted case rate of 14 cases or fewer per 100,000 residents. The new guidance also applies to adult recreational sports teams, in addition to youth sports.
“As our numbers improve and kids are getting back in school, we can now start expanding their athletic opportunities as well,” said Dr. Cameron Kaiser, Riverside County public health officer. “We know our coaches are just as committed to safety as we are, and we can make this work.”
