An Inside Look at the Business Office

The National Business Officers Association (NBOA) recently published some research on the structure and size of independent school business offices. What does staffing typically look like based on your school's enrollment and operating budget and who carries what responsibilities?
Here is what their research showed:

Small business office with 2.9 FTEs or fewer: Schools with annual operating budgets between $1million - $8 million with an average student enrollment of 295 (range 30 - 1,000).

Average business office with 3- 3.9 FTE's : Schools with annual operating budgets between $4 million and $12 million; average enrollment was 458 (range 125 - 1,000)

Large Business office with 4+ FTE's: Schools with annual operating budgets of $10 million - $50 million and average student enrollment of 742 (range 170 - 1,500)

The NBOA report describes not just the staffing structure of different size business offices but who is responsible for the variety of duties and responsibilities . This is great background information for you and trustees to be aware of, especially when discussing budgets for staffing.
