Weigh In on Sandy's Newest Community Park!
As you may have read in the Sandy Post, the City of Sandy is getting started on an exciting project to develop a new community park in the heart of our downtown!

The Sandy Community Campus Park is envisioned to serve as a focal point and gathering place for all Sandy residents and will include a wide range of amenities, such as an action sports facility to include a pump track/skate park, trails, playground, picnic shelters, natural and open spaces, and restrooms. The current site includes a few amenities such as the Sandy Skate Park and former school fields, but it is mostly undeveloped.

The first step in making this new park a reality is to create the Community Campus Park Development Plan, which will provide a framework to guide its construction. The plan will rely significantly on input and ideas provided by our community.

We Want Your Input!
We want this to be a true community park, and we need your ideas to help make that happen. We already held a very successful open house and online survey last month, but there will be plenty of additional chances for you to make your voice heard and share your vision.

Open Houses:
All open houses for this project are held at the Sandy Community/Senior Center (38348 Pioneer Blvd) from 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Spanish speakers will be present.
  • Open House #1 - January 26
  • Open House #2 - February 23
  • Open House #3 - March 23

Online Surveys
Survey links will be shared when they open on the City website, Facebook, and Instagram pages.
  • Online Survey #1- January 19 - February 2
  • Online Survey #2- February 23 - March 9
  • Online Comments - March 23 - April 6

Thank you for helping us shape the future of a great new amenity for our community, and stay tuned for much more information on this exciting project!
Keeping Groundwater out of Manholes
We've shared a lot in the Sandy Source over the fast few years about Inflow and Infiltration (I&I), and all the work we're doing through the Sandy Clean Waters project to keep groundwater from getting into our sewer system. Reducing I&I helps reduce demand on our wastewater treatment plant, protecting the system as well as local watersheds.

Much of this work has involved fixing old deteriorated collection pipes, but the program has proven so successful that we're moving into other I&I prevention methods too, including manhole rehabilitation.
Just as it does with pipes, groundwater can infiltrate the sewer system through cracks in manholes. This is a common occurrence with older manholes, as construction materials degrade over time and ground movement causes damage. If the groundwater level is higher than the manhole, water can find openings and enter the sewer system.

The City is now working to identify every manhole in our system that is affected by infiltration. One this inventory is complete, we will be able to use new technologies to rehabilitate the manholes and make them water-tight once again.

Did You Know: Sewer Bill Winter Average
We periodically get questions from utility customers about why the sewer charges on their bills are different in winter months versus summer.

Because we don’t directly meter your sewer usage, the City calculates your sewer consumption based on your water consumption. During the winter this is straightforward, but because many of us use extra water during the summer for purposes that have nothing to do with the sewer (watering plants for example), the City uses a ‘winter average’ to calculate sewer bills during warmer months.

Between November 15th and May 15th, on the sewer portion of your bill, you will see a base charge of $26.07 plus a consumption charge of $6.69 per hundred cubic feet of water usage. (For a typical household that uses 600 cubic feet of water in a month, this works out to $26.07 + $40.14 = $66.21). During the summer months of May 15th to November 15th, you’ll be billed the $26.07 base charge, plus whatever your average consumption charge was during the winter months of November 15th to May 15th.

Did You Know: Sandy Has a Seed Library
The Sandy Seed Library is a free seed project committed to increasing the capacity of our community to feed itself wholesome food by means of education that fosters community resilience, self-reliance, and a culture of sharing.

Anyone can check out seeds from the Library. Just follow these steps:

  1. Complete a seed envelope for each type of plant you want to grow.
  2. Take 1-2 seeds per plant you want to grow from its plastic zip bag, and place them in your prepared envelope.
  3. Please choose only seeds that you will plant now, so there are plenty for others too.
  4. Check out your seed envelopes at the main desk.

There is no due date on seeds, but we encourage you to learn how to save seeds for yourself and to donate back to the seed library!

You can learn how to grow and harvest your own seeds here, and learn about classes, gardening tips, and other Sandy Seed Library activities by signing up for the Seed Savers and Gardeners Email List.

Check out the video below to learn more about this wonderful community resource! It will grow on you!
