Isaiah 30:18-21

18 Therefore the Lord waits to be gracious to you;
    therefore he will rise up to show mercy to you.
For the Lord is a God of justice;
    blessed are all those who wait for him.

19 Truly, O people in Zion, inhabitants of Jerusalem, you shall weep no more. He will surely be gracious to you at the sound of your cry; when he hears it, he will answer you. 20 Though the Lord may give you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, yet your Teacher will not hide himself any more, but your eyes shall see your Teacher. 21 And when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left, your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”

Luke 9:10-17

Feeding the Five Thousand
10 On their return the apostles told Jesus all they had done. He took them with him and withdrew privately to a city called Bethsaida. 11 When the crowds found out about it, they followed him; and he welcomed them, and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who needed to be cured. 12 The day was drawing to a close, and the twelve came to him and said, “Send the crowd away, so that they may go into the surrounding villages and countryside, to lodge and get provisions; for we are here in a deserted place.” 13 But he said to them, “You give them something to eat.” They said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish—unless we are to go and buy food for all these people.” 14 For there were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, “Make them sit down in groups of about fifty each.” 15 They did so and made them all sit down. 16 And taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd. 17 And all ate and were filled. What was left over was gathered up, twelve baskets of broken pieces.
A Moment for Children
Parents, read over the lesson below and use it to stir conversation as a family!
Find a children's bible and read the story of
Jesus feeding the five thousand.
In todays story a large crowd is following Jesus up the mountain. The people want to be near Him and to hear all that He has to say. Soon everyone grows very hungry however, there is nothing to feed them. Even though he knew it would not be enough, a young boy offered his small lunch of fish and bread to Jesus. Jesus took the boys lunch and multiplied the fish and bread in his lunch. Soon there was enough to feed all 5,000 people! Jesus performed a miracle!

Jesus taught us in this moment that he will provide for us!

How has Jesus provided for you and your family?
Spend some time as a family talking about ways in which Jesus has provided for you!
Prayer
Dear God, Thank you for our many blessings and for providing all that we need. Help us to share what You have provided for us with others. Amen.

The Bethlehem Center children and staff completed their final day of summer programing this past Friday. Although their summer looked a little different without their normal plans of fun day trips and a week at sleep away camp, they made the most of it and had fun despite the challenges! You could find them every morning enjoying an intense game of hide and seek around our sprawling campus, participating in our virtual VBS and hanging out on the back porch of the FLC.

We look forward to welcoming the Bethlehem Center children and staff back to Avondale on Monday, August 24 as they begin the school year with remote learning.

Sunday, August 16 from 3 to 4 PM Christian Nurture is hosting a Back to School Bash Drive-Through at Avondale. You are invited to bring school supplies that will be used by the Bethlehem Center in preparing for remote learning at Avondale. You may also drop off your donation at the church office on Wednesday afternoons from 1:30 to 6:30 PM. Below is the link for a list of needed supplies.
