Students can be fully vaccinated for the first day of school on September 7
Now is the time for youth to get vaccinated.

Students can be fully vaccinated for the first day of school on Sept. 7 if they receive their second dose of vaccine by Aug 24. Full protection against COVID-19 infection comes two weeks after the second dose is received, so we are urging students 12 years and older to receive their vaccines as soon as possible.

Here’s what we are hearing from Niagara youth about why they’re getting vaccinated:
  • “I got my vaccine because I wanted to protect those around me.”
  • “I got vaccinated to protect myself, my family, and my community.”
  • “I got my vaccine to help stop the spread, see friends and family and save lives.”

Check out @REACTniagara on Instagram to see more health messaging from Niagara teens! Youth have also submitted their vaccine questions to Public Health - check out the answers at COVID-19 Vaccination FAQ for Youth.

Youth are invited to walk in to any Niagara Region Public Health COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. They can also book an appointment online through the provincial portal at Ontario.ca/bookvaccine or by calling the provincial booking system at 1-833-943-3900. A full schedule of clinics locations are listed on the Region’s website.

Youth may also find a pharmacy in their neighbourhood administering Pfizer by visiting this website.

Youth still have a way to go to reach the same level of protection as adults in Niagara. As of July 26, 56% of eligible 12-17-year-olds have had their first dose and 35% are protected with two doses.
Niagara receives $2 million in direct federal support for tourism sector
Niagara Economic Development has secured and awarded $2 million in direct funding from The Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario) to support Niagara’s tourism industry in its recovery from COVID-19.

The funding provided 167 Niagara tourism-dependent businesses with up to $20,000 in non-repayable contributions to support costs associated with adapting and eventually reopening, such as space renovations and retrofits, purchase of equipment and fixtures, personal protective equipment, and support for technology and digitization.

The funding supports costs to equip businesses to meet Public Health guidelines and protocols, including:
  • Purchase of PPE and cleaning supplies for workers
  • Accommodation of social distancing (expansion of restaurant patio space, pick-up windows or curbside pick-ups for retailers, secondary entry/exit to allow physical distancing, and equipment to extend the outdoor dining season)
  • Implementation of technology and digital tools to allow tourism operators to enable processes like virtual queues and timed entry ticketing

The program is being delivered in partnership with Niagara’s Economic Rapid Response Team and is estimated to help maintain 325 jobs.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Niagara’s Economic Development community has been working across municipal borders to aid and support the many Niagara businesses affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Earlier this Spring, Niagara Economic Development launched a new online business directory that allows Niagara businesses to identify and connect with both customers and local supply chain partners to increase their visibility, lower costs, and speed up production, all right within Niagara.
Ontario
Ontario expanding access to high-speed internet across the province
With an ambitious plan to bring high-speed internet to every community across the province, Ontario is announcing an investment of up to $14.7 million for 13 new projects under the Improving Connectivity for Ontario (ICON) program. These projects will bring reliable, high-speed internet to 42 communities across the province.

Ontario’s ICON investment will help expand high-speed internet to more areas, from Belleville to Bancroft, Muskoka Lakes to Puslinch, and Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls to Moose Cree First Nation. Ontario is partnering financially on these projects with various organizations that applied for provincial funding under the ICON program.

These projects will help Ontario move forward in its plan to achieve 100 percent connectivity after committing nearly $4 billion to ensure all Ontarians have access to high-speed internet by the end of 2025. This is the largest single investment in high-speed internet, in any province, by any government in Canadian history.

High-speed internet is critical for access to vital services like health care, education, employment, and justice, while increasing opportunity for everyone. This investment is part of the 2021 Budget, Ontario’s Action Plan: Protecting People’s Health and Our Economy. With vaccines being distributed, hope is on the horizon. Ontario’s Action Plan: Protecting People’s Health and Our Economy provides the resources necessary to finish the battle with COVID-19, building on the government’s record investments to protect health and jobs during the global pandemic.
