A Mid-Autumn Adventure on the Cape Cod Rail Trail
|
It has been a rainy few days here at the end of October, but most of the month has been lovely, reminding us of all of the reasons that we love Cape Cod in the Autumn. The leaves are turning and falling, the cranberries are being harvested, and folks are starting their socially distanced Halloween festivities. We have had some busy days here at Maps of Antiquity but it seems to be quieting down a bit now and we are catching up. We hope that you have all enjoyed a lovely October and a comfortable transition to Autumn.
We haven't added as many new items as we would have liked, but we will be listing many more in preparation for the holiday season! Maps make great gifts, after all! Many of these items are more valuable, but just a reminder that we also have a category specifically for maps under $100! This is an extremely fine example of the 1852 wall map of the United States with Mexico, part of Canada, and Central America by Jacob Monk, published in 1852. Amazingly, this incredible map is in original condition and even has its original varnish. Created at a fascinating time in the history of the United States, this map captures the era of western expansion that shaped the country. In the East, the focus is on transportation routes, especially railroads, with information about proposed routes with tables of distances. In the West we find the newest state in the Union, California, during the height of the Gold Rush with a large area marked on the map as the Gold Region. It is currently having its edges repaired and bound in silk ribbon, but it is otherwise unrestored.

For the BU fans and alums, this map features illustrations of Boston University buildings and other notable buildings, as well as historical facts and quotes.

If you have been with us for a while, you will know that we have a special fondness for Ernest Dudley Chase, who retired to Harwich, the town next door, towards the end of his life. This handsome map shows the vicinity of Boston with his characteristic illustrations. It is nicely framed and ready to hang on the wall or give as a special gift.

We are excited to have the antique 1880 Chatham maps back in stock again, but probably not for long! These maps tend to sell quickly and for a while we have only had reproductions. But this one is a genuine antique, so if you have been waiting for one of these, don't let this chance pass you by!

Big and beautiful, this pictorial map shows the central part of London with small illustrations throughout. It features a highly decorative border and vibrant original colors. It includes notable buildings, parks, squares, and more, and at the bottom you will find a delightful illustration of the Royal Procession.

This is an exciting find for anyone with ties to Lake Winnipesaukee. One side features a bird's eye view of the lake with illustrations and a numbered key that corresponds with features of the lake. The other side is a map of the lake as a navigation and fishing chart. This map comes with its original attached booklet.

For all of the National Parks fans out there, this map features illustrations throughout, with labels and numbers that correspond to a key on the back side. Also on the back is a map of the High Sierra Country that Surrounds Yosemite Valley. This map was produced as a mailable souvenir that you could check off your exploits on and send to family or friends, or keep for yourself.

Amusing Disney illustrations fill this map with things that each state is known for. You will recognize the famous early Disney creatures that populate the United States. A list of the states and their capitals fills the lower left corner, making this fun map an educational resource as well.
