NAECR selects Policy Fellows for 2021-22

Five faculty members have been selected to serve as NAECR Policy Fellows for the 2021-22 academic year.

The NAECR Policy Fellows Program is designed to educate early childhood researchers on policy processes, impacts and relationships to research; to provide policymakers with insight into the latest early childhood research at the University of Nebraska; and to generate collaboration among researchers and policymakers to develop effective research agendas that enrich early childhood experiences.

The program features a series of informal conversations between NAECR early childhood researchers and First Five Nebraska.

Remember to mark your calendar for this semester’s NAECR Knowledge & Networking events!

This fall's NAECR Knowledge event is this Thursday, Sept. 30, from noon to 1 p.m. The virtual session will feature ways for researches to effectively use OneDrive.

The NAECR Networking event is Nov. 18, and will provide an overview of early childhood research at the University of Nebraska, and will enable researchers to connect on collaborative research activities.

Both events are free and open to the public, but registration is required.

New! Funding Forecast: Secondary Analyses of Child Care Data, Secondary Analyses of Head Start and Early Head Start Data

The Office of Planning, Research and Evaluation in the Administration for Children and Families plans to solicit applications in 2022 for two new research grant programs. Findings from both programs are intended to inform policy, program administration and future research.

Secondary Analyses of Child Care Data
Proposals will support researchers conducting secondary analyses of data to address key questions of relevance to the Child Care and Development Fund (CCDF).

Estimated award budget: $90,000-$100,000
Estimated proposal due date: April 1, 2022

Proposals will support researchers conducting secondary analyses of data to address key questions of relevance to Head Start and Early Head Start programs and policies.

2021 Victoria S. Levin Award for Early Success in Young Children’s Mental Health Research

SRCD is now accepting applications for the Victoria S. Levin Award for Early Success in Young Children’s Mental Health Research. The award aims to foster early career success in achieving federal funding for research informed by developmental science that addresses concerns affecting the foundations of children’s mental health.

The award provides up to $25,000 to pre-tenured, early to mid-career investigators.

Proposal due date: This Friday, Oct. 1, 2021

NIMHD Social, Behavioral and Economic Impact of COVID-19 in Underserved and Vulnerable Populations

The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities has released a notice of special interest in applications that: 1) emphasize the roles and impacts of interventions, particularly those under the umbrella of digital health, as well as community-engaged and multi-level interventions in healthcare settings to address access, reach, delivery, engagement, effectiveness, scalability and sustainability of services that are utilized during and following the pandemic, and 2) encourage the leveraging of existing large-scale data sources with broad population coverage to improve prediction of various mitigation efforts (including vaccinations, masking and physical distancing to inform the public health response) on transmission reduction and on social and economic impacts, and assess the downstream health and healthcare access effects, with an emphasis on underserved and vulnerable populations.

Proposal due date: Oct. 5, 2021

National Science Foundation Discovery Research PreK-12

The Discovery Research PreK-12 program seeks to significantly enhance the learning and teaching of science, technology, engineering, mathematics and computer science (STEM) by PreK-12 students and teachers, through research and development of STEM education innovations and approaches.

Proposal due date: Oct. 6, 2021

National Science Foundation Development Sciences Program

The Developmental Sciences Program supports basic research that increases our understanding of cognitive, linguistic, social, cultural and biological processes related to human development across the lifespan.

Research supported by this program will add to our knowledge of the underlying developmental processes that support social, cognitive and behavioral functioning, thereby illuminating ways for individuals to live productive lives as members of society.

Expected award budget: $100,000 – $200,000

Proposal due date: Jan. 17, 2022

UNL Grand Challenges Catalyst Competition

The Office of the Chancellor and the Office of Research and Economic Development have committed $40 million toward the Grand Challenges Catalyst Competition. Up to $10 million is available for allocation each year in 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025.

Please review the UNL Grand Challenges Catalyst Competition RFP. The competition will be held annually from 2022 to 2025.

Letter of intent deadline: Feb. 28, 2022.
Proposal deadline: April 29, 2022.

National Research Conference on Early Childhood 2022

This three-day event presents the latest research about Head Start, Early Head Start, child care, home visiting, child welfare, special education, pre-kindergarten, early elementary and other early childhood programs.

The conference aims to strengthen programs serving young children, inform those establishing national policies for low-income families, and contribute to a meaningful research agenda in the early childhood field.
