RESEARCH AND SPONSORED PROGRAMS | JANUARY 2023 | |
Our deadlines are fast approaching for two major student research events. In addition to the CSU Student Research Competition (below), we’re gearing up for the 44th Central California Research Symposium, set for the Henry Madden Library on Weds. April 19.
The Symposium’s Call for Abstracts is available online, with all applications due by Weds., Feb. 23. Students from all disciplines are encouraged to present. Late submissions will not be accepted. Applicants are invited to choose one of the following formats: 12-minute oral presentation, poster presentation or 3-Minute Thesis oral presentation. Each student may submit only one application as a lead author.
Note that all faculty mentors will be required to electronically approve applicants prior to acceptance. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact event coordinator Kim Camarena at kcamarena@csufresno.edu.

CSU STUDENT RESEARCH COMPETITION | |
Students from all disciplines are invited to participate in the 37th Annual CSU Student Research Competition, hosted by San Diego State University on April 28-29. Students must submit their application via InfoReady by Friday, Feb. 24.
Fresno State will send a maximum of 10 delegates to represent the campus. If you have questions, please contact Kim Camarena at 278-0856 or kcamarena@csufresno.edu.

Jessica McKenzie (Child and Family Science) received a $120,756 grant from the Cultural Evolution Society Transformation Fund for her project, Globalization and Youth Development: A CrossSequential Study in Rural and Urban Regions of Northern Thailand.

Luis Fernando Macías (CLAS) received a $31,661 grant from the Gates Foundation (via Duquesne University) for his project, Test-Optional Admissions Policies and Undocumented Students.

Venita Blackburn (English) received a $5,000 grant from California Humanities to support Fresno County Youth Writing Workshops 2022/23.

The Office of Community and Economic Development (OCED) received a $150,000 grant from the U.S. Small Business Administration for the Central Valley Women’s Entrepreneur Center program.

Charles Hillyer and Laura Ramos (CWI) received a $49,996 grant from the State of California, Department of Water Resources for the San Joaquin Valley Water Collaborative Action Program.

Jenelle Pitt Parker (KSOEHD), Reva Sias (English), and Travis Cronin (DSWE) received a two-year, $55,000 grant from the Fresno County Department of Behavioral Health for the Evaluation of Jewel of Justice Community Action Research Project.

Thomas-Whit Ellis (Theatre and Dance) will be honored on Feb. 24 as a local trailblazer for the African American Historical and Cultural Museum's Black History Month Celebration.

INTERNAL FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES | |
The 2023-24 Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity (RSCA) award cycle is now open! Funding is provided by both the Office of the Chancellor and Fresno State’s Provost’s Office.
The awards provide (a) mini-grants up to $5,000; (b) summer/winter pay up to $3,000; or (c) 3 units of reassigned time to support faculty research, scholarship and creative activity toward the disciplined quest for broadening human understanding.
Faculty are encouraged to use the activities and results from these awards to pursue external funding and to broaden the scope of their research, scholarship and creative activities. Applications close at 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 21. Contact your department for more information.

CSU NSF CAREER PROPOSAL SEMINAR SERIES |
Are you thinking about applying to the NSF CAREER funding program? This series is intended to support your efforts by providing both general and individualized information to strengthen your proposal. Register online for all four webcasts. Each seminar will begin promptly at noon. Breakout discussion sessions will include NSF Program Officers and/or CSU NSF CAREER awardees.

NIH Grants Conference: The National Institutes of Health will host a virtual grants conference on Feb. 1 and 2. The conference is targeted to individuals new to NIH grants and/or looking to better understand the processes and policies behind NIH funding.

NEH Workshop: CSU Long Beach will be hosting a CSU-wide workshop providing an overview of funding opportunities offered by the NEH as well as tips for preparing competitive applications.
