September is recognized as Recovery Month by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), a division of the United States Department of Health and Human Services. This month is a national observance to inform the public, on a national level, that substance abuse treatment and mental health services can enable those with said disorders to live both a healthy and rewarding life. During September, organizations like SAMHSA strive to promote and support new evidence-based treatment and practices. There is also a light shone on the strong and proud recovery community and the dedicated providers and community members across the nation who make recovery possible.
“One small crack does not mean that you are broken;
it means that you were put to the test and you didn’t fall apart”
– Linda Poindexter
Many families and individuals have been torn apart by addiction - there is, however, light at the end of the tunnel. With encouragement, support and treatment, so many have been able to shake the bonds of addiction and lead full, healthy and inspiring lives. This month is the perfect time to offer words of inspiration and encouragement to those who have overcome their addictions, those who are just beginning their journey, and the families and loved ones who have stood by with unwavering support.
If you are struggling with addiction or know someone who is, you can reach out to the SAMHSA National Helpline 24/7. This is confidential and free assistance from public health agencies designed to help find information and treatment for those living with addiction.
