United Way:
Last day to donate is Friday, September 25th.  Now more than ever, your neighbors need you. The issues facing our community are bigger than any one individual or organization. Early Resignation/Retirement Notification Incentive:
Any licensed teacher who has worked greater than two years in USD 253 who is planning to resign or retire at the end of the school year is eligible to receive an early notification stipend.  
A written resignation or retirement notice must be submitted to the assistant superintendent of Human Resources. Stipends will be awarded according to the time table below at the end of the contract year.  See the master contract for more information.
Written notification received by:
  • October 1st would receive $1,000
  • November 1st would receive $750
  • December 1st would receive $500
  • January 1st would receive $250
Helpful dates/links for voting in the November 3 election:
  • registration deadlines, online by mail and in-person Oct. 13
  • absentee ballot deadlines request, Oct. 27, return by mail, postmarked by Nov. 3
  • early voting, Oct. 14-Nov. 2

KPERS Optional Life Insurance:
KPERS Optional Life Insurance open enrollment is September 1-30.  As part of your KPERS benefits, you have the opportunity to purchase additional coverage beyond KPERS basic life insurance.  You can decide how much you need and pay your premiums through payroll deduction.  For additional information please review the KPERS handout Open Enrollment Handout and KPERS optional life insurance website

Personal Illness Pool:
The deadline to start your involvement in the Personal Illness Pool is Tuesday, October 1. All employees on contract or work agreement are eligible to participate.  If you are already participating in the pool, it will remain in effect as long as you are with USD 253, unless you inform the Payroll Office that you no longer wish to participate.   • donation of $70,000 from the First United Methodist Church for multicultural education in each PreK-5th grade building,  $10,000 each
  • lease extension agreement with the Flint Hills Mall LLC for 2020-2021
  • Guaranteed Maximum Price for the Early Childhood Center from McCownGordon Construction for $10,675,455, allowing Build for the Future Executive Committee (BFEC) to apply funds up to the Maximum Master Budget Value of $13,381,584

  • Amend the prior action taken at the Board of Education Meeting held on the 26th of August, 2020, and that USD 253 utilize the previously approved gating criteria as one metric for making decisions regarding the specific learning, activities, and access models that the district will use during the 2020-2021 school year. Additional information utilized shall include staff and student attendance, staff and student quarantine and isolation data, input from the COVID-19 advisory group, information provided by the CDC, successful implementation of mitigation strategies, and other information deemed necessary by the superintendent to make recommendations to the board.

Build For The Future Update:
Doug Epp, board member shared highlights from the Build For The Future meeting that took place last week.
  • Early Childhood Center bids came in under budget
  • remaining funds will allow for asphalt to be replaced with concrete

  • site demo at Walnut will begin the week of October 5, 2020
  • bid day for Emporia High School is on September 30, 2020
Review the start of school and discuss delivery models:
Kevin Case, Superintendent, reviewed current community and district data regarding COVID-19 with the board.   Additionally, Case shared that the COVID Advisory committee has been meeting to review data and provide guidance for district decisions on student learning models.  Based on the data, Case recommended that students PreK-5 remain in the parents choice model and students grades 6-12 transition to step 2 of the current hybrid plan beginning on September 30th.
