#24HRS2GIVE: 'A' Day of Giving is Thursday, October 8
|

Aggies are invited to participate in the 24-hour 'A' Day of Giving during Homecoming Week 2020. We encourage students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends to join in establishing the College of Science Student Emergency Hardship Fund. We're excited to announce alums Terry & Faye Whitworth generously offer to match your gifts up to $10,000, making the most of each dollar you give!

Graduate Student Highlight:
Meet Akila Ram from Biology
|
|
Akila Ram a Biology PhD student in Prof. Erin Bobeck’s laboratory. The lab's team studies how the brain responds and adapts to opioid painkillers. Through her research, Akila hopes to understand how opioids affect pain-processing centers in the brain and in addition, harness the repertoire of receptor systems in our brain to combat chronic pain.

USU Geosciences Grad Students Excel in International Research Grant Competition
|
|
USU geosciences graduate students made a great showing in the Geological Society of America’s 2020 Graduate Student Research Grant competition, with 10 Aggies receiving grants to support thesis and dissertation research. Vying with students from throughout North and Central America, USU scholars tied for first among students representing 134 institutions.

Science Writing Center Hosting
NSF GRFP Workshop Series This Fall
|
|
The Science Writing Center is hosting a remote workshop series for students applying for the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP) this fall. Current and former Fellows will mentor new applicants through the application process over the course of five meetings, which will be held over Zoom.
Students who plan to apply this fall and who can attend all five meetings (2:00–3:30 on 8/27, 9/3, 9/24, 10/1, and 10/8) are invited to register for the NSF GRFP Workshop Series. The twelve slots will be filled on a first come, first served basis.
Applicants who are not able to participate in the NSF GRFP Workshop Series are encouraged to contact the Science Writing Center (sciencewritingcenter@usu.edu) for workshop-like guidance.

Science Unwrapped Explores 'Brave New World' in 2020-21 Series
|
|
During the 2020-21 academic year, the College of Science's public outreach program, Science Unwrapped, explores the excitement and challenges of emerging science.
This Friday, September 25, Dr. Nick Flann from the Computer Science Department will present on the topic of the spread of misinformation through social media . The talk will be broadcast at 7 pm on Aggie Cast. A live Q&A session with Dr. Flann will follow.
