Why We Read

Dedicated readers know that there are more reasons to read than could possibly be listed. Comfort, knowledge, empathy, escape, pleasure, mental stimulation and stress reduction are just a few. In these difficult and chaotic times, reading is an even more important part of our routine and self-care.

As the world seems ever more divisive, reading allows us to expand our world-view and to open our perspectives. Indeed, published studies in 2006 & 2009 show that individuals who read appear to be better able to understand other people, empathize with them and view the world from their perspective. A 2020 study found a similar result in even very young children. The more stories they had read to them, the keener their “theory of mind,” or mental model of other people’s intentions and viewpoints. Reading, fiction or non-fiction, opens up new worlds and allows us to better process events unfolding around us.

There is safety, familiarity and comfort in books. The routines and rituals that we establish around the reading of them is a healthy and necessary part of a balanced life. Now more than ever, the selection of authors and titles is vast and exciting. With over 135,000 individual titles in our bookstores and nearly 11 million available to you for quick order, our dedicated staff stands ready to share with you their favorite books. Reading and all the attendant benefits have never been more important.

Beautiful World, Where Are You is a new novel by Sally Rooney, the bestselling author of Normal People and Conversations with Friends.

Alice, a novelist, meets Felix, who works in a warehouse, and asks him if he’d like to travel to Rome with her. In Dublin, her best friend, Eileen, is getting over a break-up, and slips back into flirting with Simon, a man she has known since childhood.

Alice, Felix, Eileen, and Simon are still young—but life is catching up with them. They desire each other, they delude each other, they get together, they break apart. They have sex, they worry about sex, they worry about their friendships and the world they live in. Are they standing in the last lighted room before the darkness, bearing witness to something? Will they find a way to believe in a beautiful world?

Pre-order Highlight

From the two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Underground Railroad and The Nickel Boys, a gloriously entertaining novel of heists, shakedowns, and rip-offs set in Harlem in the 1960s.

"Ray Carney owns a furniture store on 125th Street in Harlem and his dreams for a better life depends upon its success. He isn't too fussy about where his merchandise comes from and that brings him into the orbit of some fairly disreputable people. Chief among them is his cousin Freddie, who gets Carney involved in a robbery at an upscale Harlem hotel. Part of the stolen loot is a necklace that a mob boss gave his girlfriend. He wants it back. The novel encompasses three separate stages of Carney's risky and chaotic life. Although it is punctuated with episodes of violence, there is an affable, Damon Runyonesque quality to Whitehead's book, with a host of colorfully drawn characters swirling around his protagonist who, despite the crooks and the cons, the drugs and the racial turmoil in the 1960s, remains firmly anchored in a sort of determined decency." ~ Reviewed by Alden Graves.
