Dear 7th District Community Members and Partners,
It has been a year since the first case of COVID was identified in Illinois and our lives completely changed. The pandemic has brought many challenges including losing loved ones and struggling economically to meet basic needs. We remain hopeful that better days lay ahead as vaccine distribution increases and more individuals become eligible to receive it at no cost. Local health departments continue to work to address the limited vaccine supply at the moment and to meet demand. Please see our Vaccine Corner below for information on current vaccine sites available and visit my website (www.CommissionerAnaya.com) for the latest information. Please note that additional sites will continue to open in the upcoming weeks.
As we continue to navigate the pandemic, we all play an important part in taking care of each other. Please continue to wear a mask, wash your hands, and maintain social distancing. Together we will get through this crisis and emerge stronger.

Cook County launched a website and hotline for County residents to sign-up for an appointment to get the COVID-19 vaccine. Eligible individuals include those under phase 1A and 1B guidelines that live or work in suburban Cook County. The 1B phase includes 65 years and older as well as frontline essential workers. The vaccine sites include Cook County Health and Hospitals System clinics in Chicago and additional sites in suburban Cook. For additional information on the vaccine and 1B phase guidelines, visit cookcountypublichealth.org.
To register for an appointment online visit vaccine.cookcountyil.gov and by phone call 833-308-1988. The hotline is open from Monday to Friday from 7 am to 7 pm.

Consent Calendar Resolutions |
|
This month, our office honored the life and legacy of Mr. Raul Montes, Sr. who was a tireless advocate and leader in the 22nd Ward. He worked to bring many resources to the neighborhood, including many activities for youth. He was also an important figure of the Black and Brown coalition that helped to elect Mayor Harold Washington. His legacy will be felt for generations to come.
We also honored the 70th birthday of trailblazer and community leader Sonia Silva. Sonia has been dedicated to the community over the years - as the first Latina State Representative in Illinois, as a committed electoral and union organizer, and as a Chicago Public Schools bilingual elementary teacher. She has been an advocate for the working class and immigrants for over 50 years and we thank her!

Este mes, nuestra oficina honró la vida y el legado del Sr. Raul Montes, Sr., quien fue un incansable defensor y líder en el Distrito 22. Behavioral Health Resolution #21-1189 |
|
Commissioner Alma E. Anaya led efforts on the resolution in partnership with Commissioner Brandon Johnson and Dennis Deer at the February Board meeting. Commissioners unanimously approved resolution #21-1189, to assess needs and improve the quality and effectiveness of behavioral health care provided by Cook County Government. The resolution calls for quarterly reports and public hearings from entities providing behavioral health services to evaluate ways to collaborate and improve the services provided. |

Debt Transparency Ordinance |
|
The Cook County Board voted to approve an amendment to the Debt Transparency Ordinance proposed by Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas that would increase disclosures from local municipalities on tax increment finance (TIF) districts. This would allow the public to know how these funds are being used and even allow access to download the information. |

Exemptions Automatic Renewal |
|
In an effort to reduce the spread of COVID-19, many exemptions will be automatically renewed for fiscal year 2020 such as the homeowner exemption, the 65+ exemption and the freeze among others. For households that need to apply or reapply, applications will be available in February.

Monthly Food Distribution in Back of the Yards |
|
Every first Thursday of the month, Commissioner Alma E. Anaya in collaboration with State Representatives Theresa Mah and Aaron Ortiz, distributed food to 400 families at the San Miguel Community Center. This month Back of the Yards Neighbors, the Zakat Foundation of America and Back of the Yards Public Library also joined. In addition to food, we provide masks, jackets, toiletries, and activity kits for kids. Our next food distributions and resources will be taking place on Thursday, March 4th and April 1st at 2:30pm |

Cada primer jueves del mes, la Comisionada Alma E. Anaya en colaboración con los Representantes Estatales Theresa Mah y Aaron Ortiz, distribuyen alimentos a 400 familias en el Centro Comunitario de San Miguel en Back of the Yards. Este mes de febrero, Back of the Yards Neighbors, la Fundación Zakat de América y la Biblioteca Pública de Back of the Yards también se unieron. Chicago Lawn Weekly Food Distribution for Children under 18 |

Commissioner Alma E. Anaya in collaboration with Zakat Foundation of America, Gourmet Gorilla, other Elected Officials and Community Organizations have been distributing boxes of food to families with children under the age of 18 at ACE Amandla HS in Chicago Lawn every Wednesday in February. This initiative will continue weekly until June 2021. |

We thank our partners at the Illinois Department of Aging, Rincon Family Services, the Illinois American Heart Association, and Meridian Health for helping us gather resources to distribute to seniors. |

The County’s Bureau of Asset Management (BAM) announced that two of the oldest buildings on the Cook County Jail campus, Divisions 1 and 1A, are scheduled for demolition. The Bureau is sharing community updates on the ongoing project via their website, and newsletters. Opportunity for High School Students with the Forest Preserve |

The Chicago Conservation Leadership Corps program (CCLC) is a six-week conservation service-learning experience for current high school students. Selected individuals will participate on crews that will consist of 10 high school students, one apprentice leader, and two adult crew leaders. As a team, the crew will perform ecological restoration and trail maintenance projects in the Forest Preserves of Cook County. Applications close on April 2, 2021. Cook County announced a new partnership with Summer to provide free advice and support for student loan borrowers across Cook County. Summer, a certified B Corporation, helps student loan borrowers find, compare, and enroll in loan assistance and forgiveness programs to reduce their debt. Thanks to a generous investment from the Joyce Foundation, Cook County residents can now access Summer’s digital platform and advisory services free of charge, providing them with customized loan savings recommendations and enrollment assistance.
There are no income eligibility requirements to enroll and borrowers who were unable to graduate but still hold student loan debt are also welcome to enroll. Residents looking to learn more and enroll should visit www.meetsummer.org/il.
