Women's History Month

Madame C.J. Walker was born in 1867 to enslaved parents on a cotton plantation in Louisiana by the government name Sara Breedlove. She was the first self-made, woman millionaire through creating and selling a line of haircare products for African American women, after developing a scalp condition of her own that caused her to lose some of her hair.

She founded the “Madame C.J. Walker Company” – the surname she then chose – which ended up becoming wildly successful across the country! Today, she is still remembered as a pioneering Black female entrepreneur who embraced financial independence, while working from the ground up!

May we all find the zest, ingenuity, and tenacity as Madame CJ Walker did.

Why Does It Matter If SNAP Benefits Decrease?

Things you should know about today...

It is the first day of March 2023 which means across our country, the USDA has ended the Emergency Allotment (EA) given to SNAP Benefits (previously known as food stamps) in the remaining 35 states that continued to provide it to it's residents.

The EA was a direct result from the Covid-19 Pandemic. New Jersey has been one of the states to continue the EA until by law they had to withdraw. This means an individual who was receiving a minimum of $280 for groceries during this period will now only receive $95, experiencing an almost 67% decrease in their grocery budget. Across the nation, the $3 billion a month that was going to food, has now removed.

What if your grocery budget was cut by 67%?

Well, you'd need to figure it out. Get creative, ask for help, find more coupons... And, as we all know, grocery prices are at the highest they've been since the beginning of the pandemic. So the removal of Covid Funding to SNAP Benefits comes at an extremely challenging time. Challenging for individuals, families, grocers, farmers, and food banks!

In the month of January we have spent the most we have ever spent on purchasing eggs, meats, and produce for our guests. We know we're not the only ones needing to increase our grocery budget, which is why we do have an action step you can take today.

  • If groceries are hard for you to purchase right now, visit us to receive a helping bag.
  • If groceries are easy for you to pick up, please donate so we can provide consistent food for all our programs.
  • If you can volunteer, and support the additional effort we need right now, reach out.
