Remembering David Hingsburger
It is with deep sadness we share that Dave Hingsburger passed away at his home in Toronto on Sunday. Our agency has had a very close relationship with Dave and his husband Joe for decades.

Many of the people we support, and employees have met Dave and Joe over the years through the training sessions he’s facilitated for us. He was also instrumental in the development of the Advocates Against Abuse training that built upon one of his programs to create a leading edge, peer training model for the prevention of abuse of people who have intellectual disabilities. During this past year, Dave participated as the AAA committee developed a virtual abuse training program.

For decades, as a clinician, trainer and author Dave has been an unrelenting and tireless advocate for the rights and freedom for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. A prolific writer, Dave was an early “blogger’ where he mused daily about diversity, disability and difference with equal doses of eloquence, humour and provocation. Over the years, he also authored several books that have been used by generations of disability professionals across the world to help them understand issues of humanity.

Dave was the founder and editor of the International Journal for Direct Support Professionals, a set of easy to-read, practical articles for direct support professionals on a variety of topics that are pertinent to their role in supporting people with intellectual disabilities. Earning a loyal and growing following of readers across the globe, every year Dave and his colleagues published twelve issues of the journal in English, French and Spanish. He also became a highly skilled interviewer with his monthly “Let’s Talk with Dave” webinar series in partnership with NADSP, where he interviewed the author of that month’s publication and dove deeper into the topic in a talk show format where once again, he showed his commitment, intellect and incredible wit.

Our thoughts and prayers are with those closest to David in this time, including his husband Joe.

Special Olympics Celebrates Anniversary
This Week
The genesis of Special Olympics was a summer day camp that Sargent and Eunice Shriver started in the backyard of their Maryland home.

The first games were held on July 20, 1968 in Chicago, Illinois, with about 1000 athletes from the U.S. and Canada. At those first games, honorary event chair Eunice Kennedy Shriver announced the formation of the Special Olympics organization.

Special Olympics is the world's largest sports organization for children and adults with intellectual and physical disabilities, providing year-round training and activities to 5 million participants and Unified Sports partners in 172 countries.

In The News: Walmart Loses Lawsuit Brought by Worker With Down Syndrome
MADISON, WIS. -- Walmart Inc. lost a federal lawsuit in Wisconsin when a jury sided with a sales associate who has Down syndrome and alleged that schedule changes made attendance problems that led to her firing.

Spaeth's condition requires that she maintain a rigid schedule of daily activities. Spaeth requested that she be allowed to resume her prior work schedule of noon to 4 pm because if she did not eat dinner at the same time every night, she would get sick. Instead of returning her to the old schedule, Walmart fired her. Walmart also refused to rehire her when Spaeth requested it.

The jury found that Walmart failed to accommodate Spaeth's disability and fired her because of it, which is a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Staying Well and Keeping Positive During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Brianne has been buying tropical plants and taking care of them. They are great for the air and so beautiful. It gives her something to do and more responsibilities. Taking care of plants is really hard work. She loves taking care of them.
___________

Without being able to get out and socialize and needing a positive outlet, around March 2021 Tina was feeling very stir crazy. She had been to a couple of virtual paint parties and really enjoyed them so she decided to host one online with some family and friends. They enjoyed it so much, they decided it would be a bi-weekly get together. They laugh, enjoy each other's company and have all learned a great new skill.
