November 30, 2022

Book Fair season is here! St. Catherine's has partnered with Literati to host an online and an in-person book fair this year. The online fair is open now through Friday, December 2. The in-person fair opened this Monday in the Welcome Center and will also run through the 2nd.

  • Wednesday: 7:30 – 11:30 AM and 1:30 – 4:45 PM
  • Thursday: 7:30 – 11:30 AM and 1:30 – 4:45 PM
  • Friday: 7:30 – 11:30 AM; 1:30 – 5:45 PM; 7:00 – 8:00 PM Expanded Christmas Concert hours!

St. Catherine's will receive a percentage of all books sold, which we will use to purchase books and supplies for our Sister Edna Ann Hebert Library.

This is a great opportunity to support SCM and do some Christmas shopping! The in-person fair will feature books tailored for readers aged 3-12 years old. The online fair includes an expanded inventory of books for all reading levels, including adults.

The Book Fair Christmas Concert will take place this Friday, December 2, 2022 at 6:00 PM in the school gym. This annual tradition is a great way to start Advent and celebrate the Christmas season!

All of our Lower and Upper Elementary students will lead us in Christmas carols, and the SCM Chamber Orchestra and Upper Elementary Choir will also perform.

Come enjoy the beautiful sounds of the season performed by St. Catherine’s students and take the opportunity to support the Sister Edna Ann Hebert Library by purchasing a book from the Literati Book Fair.

Call for Mentors: 9th Year Internship

The ninth-year students in the Adolescent Community are looking for mentors for their culminating internship project, and we thought we could reach out to our SCM community to see if there are any professionals who might be interested in assisting these highly motivated and capable students to explore a potential career interest this spring.

The AC internship experience is an opportunity for the students to explore professions that interest them, interact with adult mentors in a professional setting, and experience the workplace of adults. At St. Catherine’s, 9th grade is not just another year of “middle school,” but an opportunity for students to experience the adult world in new ways–with the internship experience being one of those ways.

Click here to learn more, and please contact Dr. Tucker at [email protected] by Thursday, December 1 to express your interest in mentoring a student.

PARENT SERVICE ORGANIZATION (PSO)

This holiday tradition of donating PJs, Socks and Underwear to the kids at Casa de Esperanza has been part of the SCM community for many years. This community has been so generous throughout the years with this drive, and we are hoping to collect PJs, Socks and Underwear for 106 children this year. To find out more information about Casa de Esperanza, please click here.

A Christmas tree is set up in the Welcome Center adorned with 106 ornament tags. Each tag represents a child in Casa de Esperanza's care who is in need of pajamas, socks, and underwear this Christmas season. To participate in the drive, please follow these four simple steps:

  1. Stop by the Welcome Center and select 1, 2, or more ornament tags.
  2. Register your tag(s) with Emily at the front desk.
  3. Go shopping for PJs, socks and underwear for each child you selected.
  4. Bring your unwrapped donation back to SCM no later than Monday, December 12 – this is a hard deadline. The ornament you take from the tree will serve as the gift tag, so please remember to return it with your donation.

Please be sure to stop by and select your tags before they run out! Also, don’t forget that Casa de Esperanza is in great need of basic items; please see their list here.

If you have any questions, please contact Mary Tysor at [email protected], or 713-449-3683.

Thank you in advance for your generosity and thoughtfulness.

HIGH SCHOOL CORNER

Dear SCM Community,

Last week, before the break, the High School worked as a community to begin our class project for the gala. We were joined by Ms. Wendy Wight, a local artist and former St. Catherine’s parent who helps us with our Creative Expressions class. For the project, we hung a large canvas on the soccer field, and used tennis balls to toss paint at the canvas, creating an abstract work. We had previously taken a group outing to Home Depot to pick paints, specifically in the school’s colors--different shades of blue and white with some accent colors thrown in.

Ms. Wendy helped us to explore our creative sides when approaching the project, and she helped us to figure out new ways to distribute the paint across the canvas. We were each able to add individual touches to the art, whether that was throwing the tennis balls in a specific way or using brushes to spread the paint across the canvas.

By the end of the afternoon, the project had gone from a blank canvas to a swirling, colorful piece of art. The day ended with the high school students joyous and some people's clothing covered in painted handprints! It was a memorable day, and we are in the process of deciding whether or not to add to the piece.

Sincerely,

Caroline Lewis
