CHRI Priorities & Activities:
Update from Dr. Anderson Berry
Ann L. Anderson Berry, MD, PhD, interim executive director, Child Health Research Institute (CHRI), looks to the future of CHRI as the agreement between UNMC and Children's has been signed. Forming the CHRI Advisory Board, selecting an executive director and assembling a National Scientific Advisory Board are among the CHRI activities on the horizon that will advance discovery and innovation.
Investigator Feature:
James Ford, DO
James Ford, DO, received the Young Investigator Award from Hyundai Hope on Wheels Foundation. The award in the amount of $200,000 will fund research to explore a potential new drug to treat pediatric osteosarcoma patients. Grants Awarded:
Christopher Shaffer, PharmD
Christopher Shaffer, PharmD, assistant professor of Pharmacy Practice and Science, is a principle investigator on the UNMC team awarded an NIH cooperative agreement to study the hormone oxytocin as a treatment for an important psychiatric condition of adolescence. Read on for details on this three-year, $2.2 million study.

Disseminating Discoveries:
Melissa Thoene, MD, PhD
Melissa Thoene, PhD, RD, assistant professor in the Division of Neonatology, recently published (along with co-authors) in Biomedicines regarding her recent research to understand intrauterine transfer of retinol (vitamin A) from mothers to their infants. Dr. Thoene answered a few questions about her research, click below for the Q&A.
Staff Spotlight:
Junghyae Lee, PhD, MPH
Junghyae Lee, PhD, MPH, joined CHRI as Biostatistician II on May 1, 2020. While working remotely, Dr. Lee has met with many CHRI members to provide statistical consultation for a variety of research projects. To learn more about Dr. Lee's background, expertise and current work, click below.
Study Spotlight:
PROSpect Study
CHRI shares the title with one other institution as top recruiter for the PRone and OScillation Pediatric Clinical Trial (PROSpect). Led by Sid Mahapatra, MD, PhD, as PI and Lucinda Kustka and Evan Roberts as research coordinators, the trial studies the best use of ventilators to care for children with acute and severe respiratory failure. Funded by NIH, the study is enrolling at 48 sites worldwide and will stay active for four years. Congratulations to the CHRI research team, who have been working diligently to ensure the success of the PROSpect study.

Timeline Reminder
As a reminder, please submit requests for statistical consultation with ample time ahead of submission deadlines. In order to maintain a good quality of outputs, results and manuscript, it is recommended that investigators notify Junghyae Lee, PhD, MPH, Biostatistician II, with at least two weeks notice based on the type of request, though the ideal approach is to notify Dr. Lee when initiating and planning the project proposal. 

CHRI follows the COPH Center for Collaboration on Research Design and Analysis recommendation on timelines based on the type of request:
Grant Submission – 6-8 weeks notice
IDeA CTR Project – 2-4 weeks notice
Abstract – 2 weeks notice
Presentation – 2 weeks notice
Manuscript – 2 weeks notice
