Lassen 4-H Hosts Job Interview Competition as Part of Emerald Star Project

Sixteen outstanding competitors, from four northern California counties, traveled to Susanville on April 23rd, to take part in a Job Interview Contest hosted by Lassen 4-H and created as part of an Emerald Star Project by Maddi Johnson and Lily Ammon. The interview contest coincided with the annual 4-H Presentation Day.

Competitors were required to do an interview in front of a panel of judges, who then scored the 4H’ers on various criteria. Top winners received cash prizes and will go on to the State level in July.

Why an Interview Contest? Johnson said they wanted to create something that would be valuable to the competitors down the road. Skills gained at this level will be useful to the 4H competitors when they apply for jobs. Simple concepts like ‘dress for success’ give contestants an advantage when applying for real jobs.

“You will get better if you practice,” explains Johnson who, along with Ammon, really hopes that contestants walk away with some valuable skills.

Johnson came up with the idea for the contest and said she asked Ammon to work with her because they work so well together, and she knew the two of them could accomplish something great.

The two of them had to plan, organize, host, and review the project to earn their Emerald Star status.

They created a contest manual, found local judges, wrote letters and organized the event.

35th Annual Children’s Fair Happens Tomorrow at the Fairgrounds
For nearly forty years now the Lassen County Office of Education has presented children of Lassen County with a special day all their own, a low-cost and family-friendly event held each May at the fairgrounds.

It’s a favorite event among local families, a true sign of Susanville spring and every year it seems as if more children visit the fair, more groups and organizations participate and parents who visited the fair as children return to treat their own children to the experience.
Children’s Fair Coordinator James Hall explains that the purpose of the fair is, “to provide an opportunity for families to spend a pleasant day together that will hopefully reduce tobacco, substance, and child abuse within Lassen County.”

This year the fair will feature a big selection of community organization booths providing resource information and activities for students along with a vehicle display and face painting.

Entertainment at the Children’s Fair will include dancers from J&J Performing Arts who will take to the stage at noon.

Dandy the Smokeless Dragon will be sharing lots of fun resources with his new Kick It campaign and the LCOE and Community Summer reading program will kick off.

Lassen Youth Soccer will be holding registration at a discounted price and the Lassen Volcanoes Swim Team will be having a drawing for two Yetis to support the team.

Lassen Youth Football and Star Elite Cheer will also be participating in the event.

“The Children’s Fair is intended to be a benefit to the community and not a profit-making opportunity,” explains Hall. “Be sure to come and join in the fun.”

Admission is free and the Children’s Fair is open on Saturday, May 7th, from 10:00a.m. until 4:00p.m., rain or shine, at the Lassen County Fairgrounds.

For more information you can call the Lassen County Office of Education at 1.530.251.8711.

Susanville Students Return to Classes As Peace Reigns
May 6, 1937

All was quiet on the Lassen county union high school and junior college front today, with students attending a full day of classes for the first time since Tuesday.

Threats of a permanent school strike over possible retention of six teachers on the school force were dispelled yesterday following a mass student meeting at which all surplus “steam” was “blown off” by the students.

A project vote by the students to determine sentiment regarding backing up charges filed against the six instructors by the county school board with the state department of education has been definitely called off, leaders requested.

The meeting ended yesterday at the request of Principal I. V. Funderbaugh, whose resignation touched off a flurry of trouble.

During the meeting two interested parents appeared before the students. The parents were Mrs. E. L. Thornburn and Mrs. J. V. Baker, instead of Mrs. A. E. Baker as previously reported.
