Dear Nevada AAP Members,

This past month has been filled with Nevada AAP Chapter members writing, speaking, and advocating to improve pediatric health outcomes in Nevada. Read all about their accomplishments in today's newsletter.

Looking ahead, this next month we will be focusing on getting ready for our virtual Annual Meeting & CME on Saturday, October 23. In addition to registering, I also encourage all members to record a 30 - 60 second "Why Home Means Nevada to Me" video. Learn more and view a sample video on NevadaAAP.org/annual-meeting.

Be well,

Leann

UPDATES
Published Editorial by Chapter President
Nevada AAP President Vanessa Slots, MD, FAAP worked with advocacy partners at the Children's Advocacy Alliance to pen an editorial for The Nevada Independent on the critical importance of Keeping Schools Safely Open.

The AAP strongly advocates that we should prioritize having students physically present in school. This should happen with careful measures to keep students and staff safe.

Dr. Slots' article as well as other media contributions from Nevada AAP members are listed on our In the News page. Chapter members are encouraged to email ED@NevadaAAP.org to report missing media pieces from this list.
Keeping schools safely open - The Nevada Independent

The pandemic exacerbated the differences between the have and have nots. When Nevada schools closed in-person learning and moved students virtual, those with means had solutions that those without did not. They could hire private tutors. They...

Needs Assessment of Nevada Pediatric Healthcare Clinicians
Thank you to the Nevada AAP members and prospective members who completed our vaccine needs assessment survey. The results of the survey are posted on NevadaAAP.org/immunize.

While much of data was predictable, especially in terms of school and other mandates being a driving factor in vaccination rates, it was wonderful to see that 100% of respondents said they always present vaccines as the norm!

Pediatricians are a trusted source of health information! Your contact with families who are hesitant about receiving vaccines can influence their willingness to consider vaccination.

This survey was the first major deliverable of an 18-month immunization project being led by Nevada AAP Public Health Intern Eliana Bernal in coordination with UNLV Medical Student and Nevada AAP Immunization Representative Crystal Oden. To view the complete survey data and to participate in our next survey (deadline September 30) visit NevadaAAP.org/immunize.
OPPORTUNITIES
PAL Line
In case you missed it, our September Walk with a Doc featured UNLV child psychiatrist Dr. Lisa Durette who gave a brief, family-friendly talk on When Things Aren’t Perfect: Caring for Yourself & Your Children. Watch and share the recording with your patients!

Dr. Durette and several of her collogues have launch a primary-care consultation line, call PAL, where Nevada primary-care providers can receive fast access to a doctor-to-doctor consult for a patient with a mental-health diagnosis.

Our hope if that the PAL line will increase access to mental health care for children and adolescents in Nevada. Nevada AAP members who try the PAL access line are encouraged to share your thoughts of the experience with ED@NevadaAAP.org.
Pediatrician Needed for Grant Project
The Nevada AAP is seeking one member interested in increasing the vaccination rate at their practice for a new grant opportunity.

As part of an overall organizational goal to improve families’ confidence in vaccines so more families vaccinate their children on time, the AAP is partnering again with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on a project called Vaccinate with Confidence. The goal of this project is to reduce and counter the spread of myths and misinformation, and boost vaccine confidence in communities at-risk for undervaccination. One strategy to do this, is to fund up to three AAP chapters to work with a community pediatrician to partner with and provide support to a local health organization in implementing culturally-effective vaccine confidence strategies with populations historically or culturally hesitant to vaccinate.

If you are interested in this project, contact ED@NevadaAAP.org.
