2020-2021 Back To School Convocation:
On Monday, August 17th we will celebrate our Back to School Convocation.  At 8:00 AM ENEA will meet virtually, all certified staff will be emailed a link and are invited to attend.  Then at 9:00 AM, Mr. Kevin Case, Superintendent of Schools will share a message followed by a special guest speaker with a mission to deliver an engaging, entertaining, interactive, and heartfelt keynote address that will get you fired up to obtain the impossible. In these uncertain times, he will lift your spirits, help you realize your potential, and inspire you to work and live like you believe that...SOMETHING GREATER IS ALWAYS POSSIBLE.
  • Check with your principal or supervisor on where you will be viewing the virtual 2020-2021 Convocation.

Childcare Survey:
In an effort to better understand our staff's after school childcare needs, please complete the following childcare survey by Friday, August 14, at 5:00 pm.

Salary Movement:
September 1st is the deadline to submit paperwork for salary movement and new endorsements for the 2020-21 school year. If you have any questions please call Kathy Dreier at 341-2329.

Earn $250 by referring a new bus driver:
Emporia Public Schools is in need of bus drivers for the 20-21 school year. This is a perfect opportunity for someone who may be retired, want flexibility in their schedule, or who has school days off. USD 253 employees can earn a $250 referral bonus when new bus drivers include the district employee's name on their employment application.  The $250 referral bonus will arrive after the driver has been on the job for six months. Additionally, new drivers will receive a $250 bonus on their first paycheck and another $250 bonus once training and CDL endorsement are complete. The First United Methodist Church and their many community partners generously donated school supplies for all students Pre-K through 12th grade for the 2020-2021 school year.

Board Approvals:
  • close the public budget hearing for the 2020-2021 USD 253 Budget

  • donation of $1,000 from Longbine Auto Plaza, John North, and Clint Bowyer 79 Fund to be used to purchase neck gaiters for the football team
  • KSDE's Remote Learning Assurances for the 2020-2021 school year
  • Memorandum of Agreement between USD 253 and The City of Emporia Municipal Golf Course for the 2020-2021 girls' and boys' golf teams competition season

Board Recognition:
Apollo II Cohort:
The board recognized Emporia Middle School, Village Elementary, and Walnut Elementary for joining the Kansas Can School Redesign Project as the Apollo II cohort. In order to be considered for the project, districts must be able and willing to completely redesign one elementary and/or one secondary school around the vision, outcomes, and the definition of a successful high school graduate. Each district also must be willing to launch a new school redesign in the 2021-2022 school year and be willing to serve as a demonstration school/district for others in Kansas to study, learn, and visit.

Board Updates
Build For The Future:
Eric Woltje and Charlie Ochs from McCownGordon Construction updated the board on the current district construction projects.  Ochs presented an overview of the Walnut Elementary floor plans, which outlined the renovation spaces and new construction.  Bids for Walnut came in under budget which will allow for additional classrooms and student spaces to be renovated. A timeline for construction to begin and project completion dates are anticipated as follows:
  • Walnut, construction will begin at the end of September and the project will be completed in August of 2021
  • Early Childhood Center, construction will begin at the end of October and the project will be completed in December of 2021
  • Emporia High School, construction will begin in November and the project will be completed by December of 2022
New Title IX Regulations: 
Kelly Bolin, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources reviewed the summary of changes to the new Title IX regulations.  Click here to view those changes

Reopening 2020:
Kevin Case, Superintendent of Schools provided updates and progress on the districts' reopening plans.  
  • everything that is shared is based on the most recent information the district has available
  • RecXtra is canceled at this time, the program will be re-evaluated when all students are able to be on-site
  • schools are working to validate learning plans for students who did not choose one
  • the district is working to fill vacant classified positions
  • the district received SPARK money from the county which will allow classified staff to work more hours to cover additional tasks
