Organ Notes: Genuine Music, a Picked Goose, and Mark Twain’s Organ
“When you want genuine music -- music that will come right home to you like a bad quarter, suffuse your system like strychnine whisky, go right through you like Brandreth's [purgative laxative] pills, ramify your whole constitution like the measles, and break out on your hide like the pin-feather pimples on a picked goose, -- when you want all this, just smash your piano, and invoke the glory-beaming banjo!”

So said Mark Twain in public. But, in private, Twain did not smash the piano—he owned one, and he was able to play any music he wanted.

Online Diocesan Convention highlights how "brave change" is embracing us in this pandemic year
Resolutions seeking to bring attention to the climate crisis and to confront racial injustice—one calling for repentance and groundwork toward reparations, and another focused on addressing neglect of historically Black churches in the diocese—were among the actions taken by the 235th annual Diocesan Convention, meeting online this year on Nov. 7.

Congregations and communities in the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts offer their greetings and reaffirm our mission call to embrace brave change, in this video produced for our 235th annual Diocesan Convention, held online on Nov. 7, 2020. Christ Church is at roughly 1 minute.
The Rt. Rev. Alan M. Gates, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts, gives his annual address at the 235th annual Diocesan Convention, Nov. 7, 2020, via Zoom.
