Community Coalition Member Orientation

Thank you for joining the conversation, and sharing your voice at last week’s first annual Port Angeles Healthy Youth Community Coalition Member Orientation meeting. Clallam County Juvenile and Family Services was awarded a two-year grant from Washington Health Care Authority’s Division of Behavioral Health and Recovery to re-fortify community-led efforts to prevent underage substance use and promote youth mental health in Port Angeles.

During the meeting, when asked to share the values you bring to this work, members highlighted a shared commitment towards compassion, ethics, community as well as belonging, kindness and inclusion. These values make up the word cloud (see below) that brings to life the spirit of community efforts toward youth well-being in Port Angeles.

Vision Statement

"We need to stop pulling people out of the river. We need to go upstream and find out why they are falling in," Desmond Tutu. As we move upstream together it's important we have a shared purpose that helps us build connection with one another and develop a unified system of support in service of our community.

We invite you to be a part of developing our shared vision statement by describing how our community will look after our concerns are perfectly addressed. This one-question poll is an opportunity to select your preference and provide feedback on the vision statements drafted in the last meeting: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/PAHYCVision.

Thank you for using your voice to showcase importance of prevention and health promotion in our community.

Upcoming Planning Meeting

In preparation for our upcoming grant deliverables, we are scheduling a monthly, regularly occurring Healthy Youth Coalition Planning Meeting. At these virtual meetings we’ll discuss and plan upcoming events, community outreach and coalition building. Please use this hyperlinked Doodle poll or email rray@co.clallam.wa.us to share your meeting time and date preferences.

We are an inclusive community initiative and at this September Planning meeting we will spend some time talking about how we can adopt a safe, nurturing coalition structure that reinforces equity and inclusive communication. All voices welcome.

September In the Community Activity

Port Angeles is a smallish seaside harbor town "where the mountain meets the sea." Known for its rich history, civic pride, abundant natural resources and strong-place based identity. For this months' "In the Community Activity" we are asking ourselves, our neighbors and friends: How would you define your community? And what are the relevant "communities within your community" in Port Angeles?

  • What are the communities of place, like specific neighbors, or a specific profession?
  • What are the communities of interest, like a parent teacher association or religious community?
  • What are the communities of experience in Port Angeles, like Alcoholics Anonymous or a Veteran Association?

Share your definition of community, and communities within our community via email to rray@co.clallam.wa.us.
