Today's Scripture

Wednesday of the Second Week of Lent

Taking the Gospel to prayer

Again, we hear the call to be a servant named explicitly. Notice, Jesus doesn't reprimand Zebedee's wife. Who doesn't understand a mother wanting the most for her sons? Nor does He let the apostles engage in an open power struggle. He reminds them that His ways are different and that they must give of themselves just as He would do.

It is so easy to read these texts as historical stories, but the words are meant for us. We hear "slave" and think of abuse and domination. But the truth of slavery is the relinquishing of one's freedom to do the will of another. In our case, that still holds true. We were created with free will. We are called to relinquish that freedom and, instead, conform ourselves to the will of God. He does not force us but seeks our cooperation in His plan.

So in prayer today we ask: Since Lent is about transformation, what area(s) of my life need to be more reflective of being a servant of God?
