BE AWARE: ANTI-SEMITISM is on the rise in our own local community!

From the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County:
"Over the past week, our community has experienced several anti-Semitic incidents. This is an account of those incidents and the response being taken by law enforcement, Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County’s security team and Federation’s Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) as well as media coverage of the incidents. In addition to the update below, we ask each of you to please report any hate incidents by emailing to security@jewishpalmbeach.org."

Saturday evening, January 14th:
  • Anti-Semitic messages and a swastika were projected by a laser device onto the side of the AT&T building at 325 Gardenia Street in West Palm Beach. Federation’s Security Director, Ron Vosatka, ensured that the incident was reported to local, state and national law enforcement agencies. West Palm Beach police confronted the two men they believe are responsible for this display, but they were not charged because of their first amendment protection.

  • A coordinated, and similar laser-projected display happened at the same time Saturday evening, January 14th, on an office building in Jacksonville, FL. Authorities there are investigating. This is similar to an incident that took place in October at the TIAA Bank Field in Jacksonville during a University of Florida / University of Georgia football game.

Saturday morning, January 14th:
  • Packets containing anti-Semitic flyers and other items were thrown into the front yards of several homes in Boca Raton. Boca Raton police are investigating.
MY GIRL
Happy 102nd birthday to Agnes Keleti, the world's oldest living Olympic champion! The Holocaust survivor from Hungary won a total of ten gymnastics medals, including five golds, at the 1952 Helsinki Games and the 1956 Melbourne Games. Keleti survived WWII thanks to working as a maid under a false identity, but many of her family members were among the 550,000 Hungarian Jews killed during the Holocaust. Following the war, she was able to return to gymnastics training and won her Olympic medals at the ages of 31 and 35. Today, the energetic centenarian still prefers to look forward, asserting: "The past? Let’s talk about the future. That’s what should be beautiful. The past is past but there is still a future."

MAZEL TOV TO BEN FERENCZ!
Congratulations to Benjamin B. Ferencz, almost 103 years old, the last living Nuremberg prosecutor, who was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal this past Thursday. The award is Congress’s highest honor, and was granted via a bill of bipartisan support, initiated by Congresswoman Lois Frankel. The award was given in recognition of his service to the United States and international community during the post-World War II Nuremberg trials and lifelong advocacy for international criminal justice and rule of law. Mr. Ferencz was the chief prosecutor for the trials of 22 SS officers during the Nuremberg trials. There have only been 184 Congressional Gold Medals presented since their inception, with George Washington receiving the first!
