HORNSBY MINISTRIES UPDATE
This week, Hornsby Elementary unveiled their new book vending machine. This new addition to the school is located in the lobby. Students are able to earn tokens for the vending machine by logging time reading and with good behavior and attendance.

The school has also started a new early literacy initiative. There is a display in the school office with information, ideas, and tools for promoting language and reading skills in children from 0-3 years of age. This program reaches families of Hornsby students who have school-age children in their home but also have younger siblings who benefit from the resources available for them. The families are able to pick up resources and free books appropriate for 0 to 3 years of age. This is crucial time in life for language development and development of pre-reading skills so these kids will get a jump start.

Representatives from Saint Paul’s, RISE Augusta, the CSRA Community Foundation, and other partner organizations were present for the ceremony today and we are all committed to support the important work being done at Hornsby Schools. Thank you for all of the support you have provided.

If you want to find ways that you can become more involved. Here are a few options:

  • Saint Paul’s generously donated hygiene and clothing items in October. If you would like to donate any other winter clothing items for the school clothing closet, we would welcome jackets, coats, mittens, gloves, hats, and any undergarments including underwear and socks. All child and junior sizes are welcome.

  • RISE Augusta is looking for volunteers to volunteer with students after school at their office in THE HUB (corner of Walton Way and 15th Street). They will provide instruction and materials for the tutor and provide a beautiful space for working with the kids.

  • Volunteers are welcomed to read to kids and to listen to kids read to you.

  • We are serving as a sort of Parent-Teacher Organization for Hornsby. This includes providing special treats and morale boosters for teachers and staff. Our next scheduled day for providing snacks/treats to the teacher is Thursday, February 17th. If you would like to help prepare treats or help deliver them to the school, we would love to have you participate. If you see anything here you would like to get involved with, please contact Kim Butler at 706.833.8541. We look forward to continuing to support our neighborhood schools and children.

Practicing Our Faith: A Way of Life for a Searching People (6 sessions)
Tuesdays, beginning January 10, 7:30 PM, Zoom
Our online formation book studies continue in January with Practicing our Faith: A Way of Life for a Searching People by Dorothy Bass. Books are available from Amazon and many book sellers and in the Narthex on Sunday and in the parish office during the week. ($20 donation). Sign up online using the link below.

“Practicing Our Faith offers help to Christians who are asking how our faith can help us discern what we might do and who we might become.

How can we live faithfully and with integrity in a world where the pace of existence is so fast and life's patterns are changing all around us? Can we conduct our daily lives in ways that help us not just get by but flourish--as individuals, as communities, and as a society in concert with creation and in communion with God?

These questions are on the hearts and minds of many seekers who are exploring spirituality today. They are also at the heart of Practicing Our Faith.”

The Diocese of Georgia will offer daily devotions written by Bishop Frank and Victoria Logue for a 7-week study from Advent through Epiphany. The short daily readings use the lens of Franciscan ideals including humility, simplicity, and peace as a focal point of each week.

You do not need to buy anything to take part in this study as the Diocese of Georgia Facebook page will offer the content daily. Each week the Facebook page will also feature a companion video that is posted on the diocesan YouTube Channel that expands on the theme of the week.

The reflections will also be posted on the Diocese website each day as well as their Facebook and Instagram accounts.
